Controls Engineer - Nationwide Specialty Design / Build Commercial Construction - Base Salary to 115k / year - Cleveland, OH

  • They are seeking a Controls Engineer to combine expert design, field implementation, and support functions to ensure seamless integration and optimal performance of controlled systems (BAS for HVAC) across all specialty construction divisions for company-wide design, programming, implementation, startup, and operation
  • Nationwide travel (30% likely) is anticipated for this role; for 1–2-week periods for installation / start up using “Reliable Controls” and safety PLCs; approximately 70% in-office-based.

Responsibilities :

  • Design and Engineer Controls Systems : control panel layouts, wiring diagrams, instrumentation specifications, and HMI design
  • Design control logic and programming (PLC, DDC), specifically for cleanrooms, dryrooms, and specialized doors for unique project requirements
  • Design control systems for radiation shielding vaults and their specialized doors, incorporating safety-rated PLCs for critical safety controls
  • Develop network architecture and communication protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus) for effective Building Management System ( BMS) integration and system-to-system communication; BAS / BMS Integration
  • Develop specs for control system design & offer technical guidance to teams
  • Travel to project sites nationally to perform hands-on field implementation, installation, and electrical support (approximately 30% for 1–2-week periods)
  • Install control system conduits, run and terminate all control and network wiring for low-voltage and line-voltage wiring for BAS communication
  • Mount, wire control panels, controllers, enclosures, install / terminate sensors (temperature, humidity, pressure, airflow) and actuators for dampers and valves
  • Ensure all work is to code : per drawings, diagrams, mfg. specs, electrical codes
  • Troubleshoot and resolve basic and complex electrical and wiring issues during installation and throughout the project lifecycle at different project locations
  • Work closely with Project Managers across all divisions
  • Oversee and assist in the startup and commissioning of control systems on-site
  • Develop and implement detailed commissioning plans and procedures
  • Perform point-to-point wiring checks & functional testing of control systems, sensors, actuators, and other control devices including safety-rated PLCs
  • Collaborate for optimal system performance, energy efficiency, and reliability
  • Provide training and technical support to clients and facility staff
  • Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering with a controls focus, or a related field is required
  • Expert-level knowledge of HVAC systems, Building Automation Systems (BAS), and control system components (controllers, sensors, actuators, etc.)
  • Mastery of programming and configuring various BAS control systems (e.g., Siemens, Johnson Controls, Trane, Delta)
  • Strong experience with the programming and commissioning of safety-rated PLCs and complex safety interlock sequences, (door and shielding systems)
  • Proficiency in electrical diagrams, control schematics, and mechanical drawings
  • Proficiency with common hand tools and basic electrical testing equipment
  • Ability to travel frequently, manage one's own travel and schedule effectively
  • Exceptional analytical and practical problem-solving skills for optimizing complex control systems and diagnosing hardware / wiring faults
  • Compensation :

  • Base salary in the 85k - 115k / year range; flexible dependent on experience
