Job Overview
The OB Scrub Technician III plays a critical role on the Labor & Delivery team by providing expert surgical support for obstetric procedures, including cesarean sections, emergent deliveries, and other OB / GYN surgical interventions. This role works under the supervision of the surgical team in the Operating Room and Labor & Delivery suites, ensuring the highest standards of patient safety, surgical preparation, and aseptic technique.
The OB Scrub Tech collaborates with physicians, nurses, anesthesiologists, and other perioperative staff to create a safe, organized, and efficient environment for both routine and emergency procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Function independently as the Surgical Technologist for obstetric and gynecologic procedures, including cesarean sections, postpartum tubal ligations, and emergency OB cases.
- Maintain strict aseptic technique during setup, patient draping, and throughout all surgical interventions.
- Anticipate the surgeon’s needs by selecting and preparing appropriate instruments, supplies, and equipment for OB procedures.
- Perform surgical counts with circulating nurse according to hospital and OR policies.
- Handle and process surgical specimens accurately and according to physician orders.
- Ensure readiness and availability of emergency OB surgical trays, instruments, and equipment at all times.
- Assist with positioning, moving, and transporting patients as required.
- Support room turnover, decontamination, and sterilization procedures for obstetric instrumentation and equipment.
- Serve as a preceptor and mentor for new scrub techs, nurses, and students in the OB surgical environment.
- Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives, staff education, and emergency preparedness drills.
Minimum Qualifications
Education : High school diploma or equivalent.Training :Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program OREquivalent training / experience as a Surgical Technologist in a military or hospital setting.Certification :Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) required if employed after July 1, 2013.Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification required.Experience :2+ years of surgical technologist experience preferred, with at least 1 year in obstetrics or women’s health.Strong familiarity with OB / GYN instruments, equipment, and emergency response protocols.Skills & Abilities
Expert knowledge of aseptic technique and infection prevention in obstetric surgery.Strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology related to obstetrics and gynecology.Ability to remain calm, efficient, and organized during emergency situations (e.g., emergent cesarean sections, obstetric hemorrhage).Excellent communication and teamwork skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines.Demonstrates leadership qualities and ability to precept / train junior staff.Work Environment & Physical Requirements
Frequent standing under surgical lights for extended periods during procedures.Requires frequent lifting, positioning of patients, and handling of surgical instruments / equipment.Exposure to blood, body fluids, surgical smoke, anesthesia gases, and infectious diseases.Must be able to wear protective lead aprons and personal protective equipment (PPE).Join our Labor & Delivery team and help ensure safe, compassionate, and expert surgical care for mothers and newborns.
