Job description

Overview

Advanced Manufacturing Automation & Intelligence Research Engineer role at RTX. The candidate will join the Advanced Manufacturing Team, focusing on development, testing, optimization, and demonstration of novel manufacturing technologies for internal deployment and external research programs across additive manufacturing, robotic automation, machining, repair, surface treatment, sensing, among others. The position emphasizes leading and supporting programs with a focus on large platform metal additive manufacturing and directed energy deposition technologies.

What You Will Do

  • Development and deployment of advanced manufacturing equipment, including integration of sensors, industrial robotics, motion platforms, and process equipment (e.g. welding, additive manufacturing, cutting, deburring)
  • Identify, develop, and demonstrate sensing and control approaches for large format metal additive manufacturing
  • Integration and optimization of advanced manufacturing workflows, leveraging robotic / CNC motion platforms and process monitoring techniques
  • Troubleshoot process and equipment issues and make necessary adjustments to achieve desired project outcomes
  • Partner with engineers, technicians, and subject matter experts to identify and pursue technology initiatives
  • Develop concepts and marketing campaigns in pursuit of R&D funding from internal and external sources
  • Work safely at all times, following all safety protocols and procedures
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures

Qualifications You Must Have

  • A University Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience, or An Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years experience
  • Manufacturing systems integration
  • Experience with process sensing, monitoring equipment, and data collection
  • Proficiency with industrial robotics (e.g., ABB, FANUC, KUKA, etc.) and / or related automation technologies (CNC systems, Siemens, FANUC, etc.)
  • Hands-on experience with manufacturing processes, equipment, and sensors
  • U.S. Citizenship required
  • Qualifications We Prefer

  • A PhD in a related field of experience
  • Hands-on experience with welding and metal additive manufacturing / 3D printing, including large platform wire and powder-fed directed energy deposition (DED)
  • Experience configuring PLCs (e.g., Beckhoff, Allen-Bradley, Rockwell) for system automation, and integrating sensors using industrial communication protocols (e.g., DeviceNet, EtherNet / IP, ROS-Industrial)
  • Background in configuring and interfacing with industrial robot controllers (e.g., ABB IRC, KUKA KRC)
  • Demonstrated background in optimization of manufacturing processes, such as machining, welding, coating, assembly, and / or other advanced manufacturing methods
  • Scripting experience with Matlab, Python, VBA, JavaScript or similar
  • Experience working with DoD and other government agencies
  • Experience writing proposals and leading R&D projects

    This is an onsite role; eligible candidates must reside within commuting distance from East Hartford, CT.

The salary range is 82,000 USD - 164,000 USD and may vary based on experience, location, education, and skills. Short-term and / or long-term incentive programs may apply depending on position level and collective-bargaining agreement status.
