General Purpose
The Structural Designer and Die Manager is responsible for day to day operations and leading the Structural Design and Die teams with an emphasis on delivering a quality product that meets the clients’ expectations. This role provides leadership within the Packaging platform across multiple packaging plant locations by ensuring employees perform according to job expectations, company guidelines, and budgeting goals. The focus is on producing top quality standards with efficient and consistent processes, creating prototype technical illustrations of packaging ideas, on a variety of materials, to produce dimensional drawing specifications samples for the client.
Key Responsibilities
Define business objectives and key project initiatives for the team
Streamline workflow and develop processes to ensure consistency across all packaging locations
Effectively manage labor by staffing appropriately, managing overtime, and allocating resources as required to accomplish assigned tasks
Evaluate timeliness of jobs through production areas and ensure timelines are met
Continuously analyze and identify ways to improve or automate existing processes
Understand client requirements and ensure the correct resources are assigned to accomplish assigned tasks
Lead, mentor, and develop the structural design and die making team, including safety, interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems
Confirm accuracy and completeness of job order, setup of the plotting table(s) and the maintenance of the production process to ensure that the design will successfully and cost effectively meet the customers job order
Consult with the sales team on current and potential carton products and recommend the best ways to meet the packaging needs
Protect client products and aid Quad in securing and maintaining key industry certifications through consistent adherence to quality, satisfaction, and excellence standards represented by AIB International, cGMP, FSC Chain-of-custody, ISO, and SFI Chain-of-Custody certifications
Enter design into CAD program per the specifications of the job order to include materials, processes, dimensions, and tolerances
Provide technical support as needed. Collaborate with sales and CSR team to offer ideas that create a better product / design offering to our customers
Determine and identify die components needed for client job order and ensure those components are in-stock or ordered to support client project timelines
Provide ongoing communication and updates on die and die component delivery schedules to the packaging scheduling team to ensure timely completion of clients works
Review and understand the filling equipment using the cartons to be produced by company. Ensure that designs meet these equipment standards and will run efficiently on the equipment
Education and Experience
Education
High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED); a 4-year college degree from a packaging school program is preferred
Experience
Minimum 10 years of CAD and ancillary systems or design related experience; minimum 10 years of experience in packaging design and development; familiarity with Artios CAD; Adobe Illustrator and Design; 1–2 years of experience as a manager or leader (preferred)
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Track record of leadership, coaching and mentoring abilities
Ability to lead a team effectively and provide direction to other members on the team
Sound business acumen; strategic skills
Familiar with paperboard carton production and processing (a plus)
Understand Artios CAD and software needed to produce files for folding cartons, dies and components
Understand input, output, raw material, waste, quality control, cost and techniques for maximizing manufacture and distribution of goods
Knowledge of design techniques, principles, tools and instruments for production and use of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models
Strong knowledge and experience with die making equipment
Ability to quickly and accurately compare letters, numbers, objects, pictures or patterns
Ability to troubleshoot problems and determine root cause
Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
