Works in support of the Division of Domestic and Sexual Violence Services (DSVS). If you are looking to work in a diverse community to support individuals who have been affected by domestic and sexual violence, then this opportunity may be right for you.

Please note for this requisition, experience in psychotherapy (e.g. counseling, clinical psychology, or marriage and family therapy) counts as social work experience.

ABOUT THE POSITION : Under general supervision of the counseling services supervisor, performs the below duties and responsibilities :

  • Provides brief treatment mental health counseling (individual, couple, family, and / or group) with adults and children affected by domestic and / or sexual violence.
  • Functions independently as a senior licensed clinician able to provide clinical diagnoses using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, safety planning, complex clinical evaluations, and treatment planning.
  • Provides direct clinical services that may include crisis intervention for stabilization, comprehensive clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, relapse prevention, adaptive behavior changes, risk assessment & management, prevention, psychoeducation, & case management.
  • Possesses specialized knowledge in trauma-specific treatment, substance use issues, family dynamics, art and play therapy, and / or other treatment modalities.
  • Supports learning of resident counselors (license eligible counselors) and interns through clinical supervision, shadowing, documentation monitoring and training.
  • Makes appropriate referrals for clients requiring long-term services or services not offered through Clinical Services.
  • Provides case consultation and collateral counseling for longer-term treatment.
  • Provides community and professional training, volunteer training and supervision, and student supervision, as requested.
  • Documents all client and collaborative work per professional and ethical standards in a timely manner.
  • Works as part of the Domestic and Sexual Violence Services (DSVS) Clinical Services program and in coordination with other programs of DSVS toward its mission.
  • The duties of this position may require an alternative or flexible work schedule, including evening work and on-call work, as required to meet client needs and to ensure adequate staffing of Clinical Services operating hours.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, in both English and Spanish
  • Crisis intervention and safety planning skills
  • Knowledge of how trauma impacts and relates to domestic and sexual violence problems (as a victim, perpetrator and / or witness).
  • Knowledge of and ability to assess and provide treatment independently as a licensed clinician for clients with mental health and substance use disorders and or to support such intervention when needed with other agencies and personnel.
  • Knowledge of and expertise in specialized treatment modalities such as trauma-specific treatment, substance use issues, family and relationship dynamics, art and play therapy, and other treatment modalities.
  • Ability to provide telephone emergency counseling, support, lethality assessment, safety planning over 24-hour on call shifts and to provide face-to-face accompaniment support to sexual assault and domestic violence victims in a hospital setting.
  • Have specialty and / or certifications in treating trauma, play therapy, art therapy and / or trauma focused CBT.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

    Graduation from an accredited college with a master's degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or nursing; plus two years of clinical experience.

    CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED :

    Possession of a current license to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia in one of the following : Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Professional Counselor, Clinical Psychologist, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist.

    NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :

    The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and a Child Protective Services Registry check screening to the satisfaction of the employer.

    This position is emergency / essential services personnel. (Required to report for duty during inclement weather and / or other emergencies.)

    Flex schedule, evening, and on-call work required to meet client needs.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

    Master's degree in a field related to counseling, social work, psychology, or marriage and family therapy.

    At least 24 months of experience directly providing psychotherapy specifically to treat trauma in adults, children, youth, and families.

    Demonstrated experience in broadly addressing the impacts of domestic or sexual violence with victims.

    Completed and applied professional training in a trauma-specific treatment modality.

    Bilingual in English and Spanish.

    Experience working in Human Services.

    Professional experience training staff and clients, oral presentations / public speaking, court testimony, project management, meeting facilitation, and conflict resolution / mediation.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

    Ability to communicate clearly, orally and in writing.

    Ability to travel to various locations throughout Fairfax County to provide coverage, attend meetings, and trainings not accessible by public transportation.

    Ability to use keyboard driven equipment and other automated technology to access, input, retrieve, and process information.

    This job is generally sedentary in nature.

    Work requires performing tasks with risk of secondary traumatic stress.
