Job Summary

Purpose of Position :

The Skilled Trades Student Lab Assistant provides support to the Skilled Trades lab four craft areas (Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing, and Welding).

This position is only open to students with Federal Work Study eligibility.

This position will begin Autumn semester.

Duties and Responsibilities :

1) Assists the department staff and / or faculty in the maintenance and operation of the departmental lab, including cleaning of tools, equipment and sweeping of lab floor.

2) Prepares materials and supplies for student use and ensures equipment is ready for use.

3) Sets up materials and supplies in classrooms or laboratory as needed and collects materials and supplies following use.

4) Ensures equipment is stored properly.

5) Assists in general maintenance and cleaning of equipment.

6) Assists with check-in and storage of delivered supplies.

7) Assists in monitoring levels of supplies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

Knowledge of : General knowledge of construction trades, standard construction supplies, tools and equipment.

Skill in : Operations of job related equipment; Organizational skills; Attention to details; Verbal and written communications; Observing a task and completing it in an efficient and effective way.

Ability to : Follow directions and instructions; Recognize when to ask questions if not sure about a task at hand; Follow safety practices and protocols.

Minimum / General Qualifications :

This position requires applicants to have Federal Work Study as part of their current Financial Aid package with Columbus State. You must also be enrolled in SIX or more credit hours in a degree or certificate program. Any applicants without Federal Work Study eligibility will not be considered for this position.

Applicants must have received a high school diploma or a certificate of attendance from an accredited secondary school or a certificate of high school equivalence and be exempt from Ohio Revised Code Chapter 4109.

Must have reliable transportation or other means to get to work regularly.

Students enrolled as Transient, College Credit Plus, Undecided, or otherwise non-degree-seeking are not considered eligible for Student Employment.

Schedule :

TBD by the needs of department and student schedule between office hours of Monday - Friday 8 am to 5 pm. Maximum 20 hours per week.

Work will be performed : On-site only.

Position Specific Qualifications :

Hired students will not be eligible to assist with lab assignments if currently enrolled in a corresponding lab course.

Preferred Qualifications :

Previous experience in a Skilled Trades lab or environment (work, volunteer, or school experiences).
