Job description

Medical Assistant

The Medical Assistant provides direct patient care and clinical support within an outpatient clinic. Responsibilities include obtaining vital signs, reconciling medications, collecting patient history, and facilitating patient flow. Additional duties involve managing the electronic health record (EPIC), scheduling appointments, processing medication requests, handling prior authorizations, and coordinating tests and procedures. Upon successful completion of clinical competency, the role may also require performing EKGs, lab tests, injections, and / or phlebotomy. Strong communication and organizational skills are essential to ensure efficient patient care and support for providers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Manages the coordination and flow of patients throughout the patients visit to create an exceptional patient experience.
  • Proactively check the providers schedule and review information within the patient record to ensure that all required information is available prior to their visit.
  • Proactively obtains any missing information from the patient to ensure that medical records are accurate and up to date, which helps to ensure better care is being provided.
  • Upon arrival, captures patients vital signs, past medical, social and family history, medication usage and preferred pharmacy information.
  • Ensures compliance with all state and federal regulatory requirements including HIPAA / OSHA compliance.
  • Able to respond to patient call backs and phone in prescription refill requests.
  • Able to administer medication and injections, as directed by Physician / Provider.
  • Able to perform phlebotomy on patients, as directed by the Physician / Provider.
  • Able to perform EKGs, PFTs spirometry, nebulizer treatments and ear irrigations, and other procedures, as required by the practice and directed by the Physician / Provider.
  • Able to perform in-office lab testing such as glucose testing, strep screens, pregnancy tests, urinalysis, and HgA1c as directed by the physician / provider.
  • Able to perform sterilization on instruments used for minor procedures / surgeries according to the CDC recommended guidelines.
  • Maintains all certifications / licensures as required by the scope of the role being performed.

Requirements for Certified Medical Assistant :

  • Current MA Certification from AAMA, AMT, NAHP, NCCT
  • Basic computer skills, specifically with navigating within databases containing highly confidential information
