Job description

MaineHealth Behavioral Health (MHBH) is seeking a dedicated and skilled Adult Outpatient Psychiatrist to join our tertiary academic practice in Portland, Maine. This is a full-time, faculty opportunity for motivated clinicians who are also passionate educators, committed to advancing the care of individuals with complex mental health needs and the training of future healthcare professionals.

Our outpatient psychiatry clinic is an integral part of a leading academic medical center and is staffed by a collaborative, multidisciplinary team that includes psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, vocational counselors, and a neuropsychologist. We work in close partnership with both primary and specialty care providers, ensuring holistic, patient-centered treatment. The clinic is associated with a full continuum of care—including a partial hospital program, an inpatient hospital, and an emergency department featuring an acute psychiatry unit—enabling transitions and comprehensive support for our patients.

Position Highlights:

  • Provide high-quality, evidence-based psychiatric care to adults in an outpatient setting, focusing on individuals with complex and co-occurring mental health conditions.
  • Engage actively in collaborative treatment planning with multidisciplinary colleagues and referring providers across the care continuum.
  • Serve as a clinical educator, teaching psychiatry residents and medical students through direct supervision, didactics, and clinical consultation.
  • Participate in team and staff meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and opportunities for academic development and scholarly activity.

Minimum Qualification:

  • Graduate of Allopathic or Osteopathic Medical School. Completion of internship and psychiatric residency and/or fellowship training.
  • Current or eligible licensure as a physician by the Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine.
  • Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology or be eligible for examination by the American Board as documented by written evidence.
  • Board Certified or board eligible in general psychiatry.
  • Current DEA Registration Certificate.
  • Demonstrated experience or strong interest in adult outpatient psychiatry and treating patients with complex mental illnesses.
  • Enthusiasm for medical education and mentorship, with a commitment to teaching and learning in a diverse academic environment.

This position offers:

  • Competitive compensation package including sign-on bonus and relocation assistance to qualified candidates, CME expense reimbursement, and malpractice insurance.
  • Benefits include Paid Time Off, CME time, retirement options with employer contributions, medical, dental, vision, life/disability coverage, and more.
  • Institutional support for obtaining a faculty appointment at Tufts University School of Medicine.

Additional Information:
