Colusa Medical Center, provides bothinpatient and outpatient services, including emergency services,to the surrounding community bringing exceptional healthcare and service to our community.
POSITION SUMMARY :
Under the direction of the E.D. Nurse Manager, and the R.N. on duty each shift, the E.D. Technician is responsible to : assist in the flow of the E.D., assist patients with activities of daily living and provide basic nursing care, ensure the E.D. is clean, orderly, and well stocked, and transport patients as directed by the E.D. R.N. on duty. Additional duties may include patient registration, and communication with other Glenn Medical staff members, Dispatch, EMS personnel, and other facilities within the CNA Scope of Practice.
Job Qualifications / Education / Experience :
1. Current CNA Certification or Current EMT Certification.
2. Current BLS Certification.
3. High School Graduate or Equivalent.
4. Ability to read and communicate effectively in English, additional languages preferred.
Physical Demands / Requirements :
Must be able to pass the pre-employment physical exam and testing for this position
Job Expectations :
Provide basic nursing care to patients within the CNA Scope of Practice that includes actions to meet physical and psychosocial needs of the patient. Maintain the E.D. environment to meet Infection Control standards and provide optimal patient care at all times. Work collaboratively and congenially with all physicians, nurses, other Glenn Medical staff members, patients, family members, and visitors to ensure optimal patient care. Maintain all required Certifications, and complete requested Annual Competency Requirements and required Inservices. Maintain patient confidentiality at all times, following HIPPA guidelines. Report to work on time, wearing the Glenn Medical Center ID Badge, dressed appropriately following the dress code, and as scheduled. Complete time card entries on CPSI accurately, as well as CPSI documentation with the CNA Scope of Practice. Follow Administrative Policies and Procedures pertaining to Time and Attendance. Read, follow, and comply with Policies and Procedures of Glenn Medical Center as they apply to this position. Represent Glenn Medical Center in a positive and professional manner.
Specific Job Duties :
1. Register patients when necessary
2. Maintain patient confidentiality and privacy per HIPPA guidelines.
3. Place patients in E.D. rooms as assigned by the R.N. on duty.
4. Perform / assist with undressing of patients and providing gown / blankets topatients
5. Obtain and document accurate vital signs, including temperature, blood pressurepulse, and pulse oximetry reading on all patients. Rectal temperatures are to bedone on children under age 3, as applicable and requested by the R.N. on duty. There will be an Annual Rectal Temperature Competency Test.
6. Obtain accurate height and weight on all patients, utilizing the proper scale for theage and mobility of the patient.
7. Connect patients to EKG monitor. There will be an Annual Competency Test.
8. Obtain 12 lead EKG on patients. There will be an Annual Competency Test.
9. Perform or assist bathing and hygienic care of patients.
10. Perform or assist patients with toileting needs, utilizing the proper method asapplicable for the age, mobility, and physical / mental status needs of the patient.
11. Basic wound cleaning under the supervision of the R.N. on duty and / or physician.
12. Basic wound dressing under the supervision of the R.N. on duty and / or physician.
13. Collect voided urine specimens from patients and handle appropriately.
14. Set up for pelvic exams and provide chaperone assistance to the physician asnecessary. Assist in the collection of pelvic exam specimens as directed by thephysician. Ensure the suction equipment is properly functioning prior to thepelvic exam in applicable situations.
15. Set up for Incision & Drainage as applicable, utilizing proper Infection Controlpractices.
16. Transport specimens to Lab in a timely manner.
17. Assist with moving patients from wheelchair to gurney, or gurney to bed and viceversa as necessary. Assist ambulatory patients in safe ambulation as necessary.
18. Input medications list into CPSI as taught during CPSI Training. All medicationsare to be verified by the R.N. on duty.
19. Empty Foley catheter bags, report and document color / character / amount of urineobtained.
20. Empty NG suction canisters, report and document color / character / amount offluid obtained
21. Empty colostomy bags, report and document color, character, consistency of stoolobtained.
22. Obtain repeat vital signs on all patients as directed by the R.N. on duty.
23. Obtain discharge vital signs on all patients prior to discharge.
24. Direct patient / family / visitor questions to the R.N. on duty.
25. Perform / Assist with splint application and documentation following successfulcompletion of the Splinting class. There will be an Annual Competency Test.
26. Report all changes of patient condition / mentation to the R.N. on dutyimmediately.
27. Report all patient / family complaints to the R.N. on duty immediately.
28. Take items to other hospital departments as requested by the R.N. on duty.
29. Obtain dietary items for patients as requested by the R.N. on duty.
30. Perform / assist with feeding patients as requested by the R.N. on duty.
31. Obtain medical records from the storage room as requested by the R.N. on duty orthe physician.
32. Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation under the supervision of the R.N. on duty.
33. Keep Emergency Department clean, organized, and restocked at all timesincluding all patient care and non-patient care rooms.
34. Clean gurneys and equipment utilizing approved cleaning methods.
35. Perform E.D. Tech daily equipment operation checks.
36. Answer phone calls in a cordial and professional manner, notifying andtransferring calls to the R.N. on duty / physician on duty appropriately.
37. Make requested telephone calls to arrange for patient transport as necessary andrequested by the R.N. / physician. E.D. Techs may NOT take ambulance reports,nor give report to accepting facilities / EMS personnel. The E.D. Tech may answerbasic transport questions, such as name, age, sex, chief complaint / diagnosis to theDispatch / transporting personnel when making helicopter or ambulance transportarrangements, but REPORT is done only by the R.N. on duty.
38. Redirect requests for assistance outside the CNA Scope of Practice to the R.N. onduty immediately.
39. Check the E.D. Stock Supply items for outdates, remove outdated itemsimmediately and replace.
41. E.D. Techs may NOT remove Intravenous Lines / Catheters.
42. E.D. Techs may NOT remove Foley Catheters.
43. E.D. Techs may NOT discharge patients. Discharge and Patient Care Follow UpInstructions are to be done by the R.N. on duty.
44. Use of personal cell phones during work time is to be kept to a minimum. The useof personal cell phones, I-Pads, Kindles, or similar devices is restricted to Breakand Meal Times, or when the E.D. is completely empty of patients, and all therooms have been fully restocked and required Daily Checks completed.
45. Absolutely no patient / family / visitor photos may be taken at any time using apersonal cell phone.
