A Systems Engineer specializing in EV (Electric Vehicle) Charging is responsible for the end-to-end technical design, integration, and performance of EV charging infrastructure. This role is crucial for developing reliable, safe, and scalable charging solutions that support the growing EV market.

This job description is structured into key sections :

Role Summary, Key Responsibilities, Required Qualifications, and Preferred Skills.

Role Summary

The EV Charger Systems Engineer will drive the technical development of electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) and charging network solutions. This includes translating market needs and customer requirements into detailed system designs, ensuring compliance with global and national standards (e.g., UL, IEC, ISO 15118, NEC), and leading the integration of hardware, software, and grid connectivity. The ideal candidate possesses a strong background in electrical or systems engineering, a deep understanding of power electronics, and a passion for sustainable energy technology.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Architecture

  • System Design : Develop technical specifications, system architecture, and detailed design documents for AC Level 2 and DC Fast Charging systems, ensuring optimal performance, efficiency, and scalability.
  • Requirements Management : Translate stakeholder needs (product management, R&D, customers) into clear, verifiable system and subsystem requirements using tools like DOORS or Jama.
  • Component Selection : Select and evaluate core components, including power electronics, transformers, circuit protection, communication modules, and cables.
  • Grid Integration : Coordinate with utility companies and power systems engineers to manage electrical load calculations, power flow analysis, and safe connection to the local grid infrastructure.

Standards, Safety & Compliance

  • Regulatory Compliance : Ensure all charging system designs comply with relevant electrical codes (e.g., NEC / NFPA 70), safety standards (e.g., UL, IEC, CE), and EV charging communication protocols (e.g., ISO 15118, OCPP).
  • Safety Analysis : Lead or support functional safety efforts, including Hazard Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) on charging systems.
  • Documentation : Prepare comprehensive technical documentation, including schematics, bills of material, test plans, and installation guides.
  • Validation Testing

Verification and Validation (V&V) : Develop and execute comprehensive Design Verification Plans (DVP&R), utilizing test methods such as Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL), Software-in-the-Loop (SIL), and on-vehicle / on-charger testing.

  • Troubleshooting : Perform root cause analysis and technical troubleshooting for system-level issues identified during development, field trials, and deployment.
  • Commissioning Support : Provide expert technical support for the installation and commissioning of charging stations in the field.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Interdisciplinary Coordination : Act as the primary technical interface between hardware, software, firmware, and mechanical engineering teams to ensure seamless system integration.
  • Stakeholder Communication : Present technical concepts, design decisions, and testing results clearly to internal teams, external partners, and customers.
  • Essential Qualifications

  • Education : Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
  • Experience : Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in system-level design, development, or testing of electrical, automotive, or power systems; direct experience with EV charging infrastructure or power electronics is highly preferred.
  • Technical Knowledge

  • Solid understanding of electrical power systems, power distribution, and load management.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols relevant to EV charging (e.g., CAN, Modbus, OCPP).
  • Experience with requirement management and system modeling tools (e.g., JAMA, DOORS, Simulink).
  • Skills : Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Desired Skills

  • Master's degree in a relevant engineering field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or relevant certifications (e.g., EVITP).
  • In-depth knowledge of DC Fast Charging (DCFC) principles and high-voltage power conversion.
  • Experience with functional safety standards (e.g., ISO 26262 or similar safety-critical system development).
  • Proficiency in simulation and modeling software (e.g., MATLAB / Simulink).
  • Familiarity with cloud-based fleet management or energy management systems.
