Job description

Position Summary :

The ED Lead Registered Dietitian is responsible for consulting in a collaborative fashion with the Director of Nutrition & Wellness, and the treatment team to ensure the best standard of nutrition and dietary services are occurring. The Lead RD also collaborates with all the other RDs and Diet Techs (DTs) to ensure that, within the facility, the dietary program is organized and executed to the Discovery’s standards. The RD completes a Dietary Assessment when indicated and directed by the treatment team. The RD meets with all assigned patients weekly, conducts Nutrition Education Groups and Dietary Experientials and oversees the responsibilities of the Diet Technician.

Essential Job Functions :

  • Conduct Dietary Initial Intake Assessment and corresponding documentation within 72 hours of admission, including collecting data related to height, weight medical history, and determining TBW.
  • Implement one dietary treatment plan for each patient within 72 hours of admission.
  • Conduct weekly, and discharge sessions with patients. Daily written documentation of each session completed in an appropriate time frame.
  • Documents of each patient’s progress throughout the treatment stay according to Center for Discovery documentation guidelines and protocols.
  • Meet with each assigned patient 1-2 times per week based on level of care and implement / manage individualized dietary meal plans to meet patient’s needs.
  • Identify weekly treatment goals and communicate to the treatment team relative to individual patient needs. Registered Dietitian is an integral part of the treatment team process.
  • Co-facilitate therapeutic family meals appropriate to Outpatient level of care.
  • Facilitate meals as well as Nutrition Groups weekly that are appropriate to the adult and adolescent age groups.
  • Make appropriate changes to an individualized meal plan as needed based on medical indicators and weight goals / trends.
  • Communication with referring and / or outpatient dietitian upon admit to Outpatient Program, during course of treatment as needed, and upon discharge from program.
  • Communication with Medical Doctor, as needed, regarding any medical problems that may require dietary intervention. Communication with Psychiatrist where applicable.
  • RD remains appropriately accessible to family members, including weekly communication (phone, email or in person) with parents of adolescents.
  • Represents Center for Discovery through a positive public presence while out in community settings such as educational events, Marketing events, Conferences and Talks.
  • Understanding of application of Motivational Interviewing.

Leadership :

  • Exercises supervision of the implementation of the dietary program
  • Oversee the kitchen to ensure safety and sanitation
  • Monitors grocery purchasing for appropriateness with regards to patient needs and budget
  • Works with the program director to ensure all dietary groups are scheduled and staffed appropriately
  • Disseminates information as needed to dietary team members
  • Supports staff with dietary program as needed
  • Responsible for dietary training within the facility
  • Core Competencies :

  • Ability to run groups effectively AEB providing a check-in, engaging all members, and providing structure to group format.
  • Able to show effective writing and communication skills AEB documentation review, email timeliness, and verbal communication with staff and patients, add timeliness with documentation Ability to support in meal prep and meal support AEB accurate portioning, following proper kitchen safety & sanitation guidelines, engaging patients during meal, and able to provide redirection as needed.
  • Able to create an individualized meal plan for patients following the guidelines listed in RD manual, accounting for any co-occurring medical condition, eating disorder pathology, and need for structure.
  • Able to effectively conceptualize cases for patient presentation and level of care, including but not limited to, meal plan progression, treatment plan development, and goal setting.
  • Knowledge, Education, Experience :

  • Bachelors Degree with appropriate emphasis and completed accredited dietetic internship
  • One year experience in dietary counseling, preferred one year experience specifically with treating Eating Disorders as well as some leadership or management experience
  • The Registered Dietitian must be fully registered / certified in the appropriate state, candidates who have completed their dietetic internship and are eligible to take the registration exam may be considered
  • Must pass all applicable state background checks.
  • Training courses must be complete :
  • Behavioral Intervention (Pro-Act) of CPR / First Aid
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of nutrition and dietary interventions in the mental health field. Must be able to communicate with people from all educational and cultural backgrounds.
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must demonstrate tact, initiative, resourcefulness, professional manner, enthusiasm, and a non-judgmental attitude.

  • The ability to respond quickly to emergency situations, which may involve running or moving rapidly.
  • Frequent standing and walking for extended periods, often throughout the entire shift.
  • Potential exposure to infectious diseases, bloodborne pathogens, and hazardous materials, requiring adherence to safety and PPE protocols.
  • Arbitration Agreement :
