General Navigator- Medical Oncology
The General Navigator is responsible for expediting oncology patient access to services and resources by guiding patients through the health care system, collaborating with physicians, providing support, education, coordination of care and other assistance during the diagnosis and treatment planning stages for patients with lung disease The nurse must be attuned to the physical, social, and emotional needs using the nursing process with established principals of nursing practice. This individual is a registered nurse who strives to elevate the standard of comprehensive patient care and to provide education and supportive services as needed. This person is responsible for fostering growth opportunities for the individual, family, and community through instruction and educational programs. The nurse navigator must work collaboratively with family physicians, surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, radiation and medical oncologists, and other health care professionals to support and ease the patient’s journey through the health care system. The nurse functions as patient advocate and physician / patient liaison. Promotes positive community relations by being involved within the community at different levels. Other duties as assigned.
Education : Bachelor's in Nursing required. State License required. BLS Healthcare Provider required within 3 months of hire. ACLS preferred. Chemotherapy / Immunotherapy certification required. OCN Desirable.
Experience : Two to three years clinical oncology experience preferred. Experience in planning, developing, coordinating teaching and evaluating health programs desirable. Progressive experience in Nursing Education. Experience in health care system navigation processes. Experience with the issues of financial, cultural, educational and societal barriers to information and care in patient population. Excellent customer service and organizational skills. Proven experience establishing collaborative working relationships with the medical community. Strong communication skills. Positive, enthusiastic attitude. Excellent public relations, marketing and public speaking skills. Fluent in Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel and Outlook. Must be knowledgable of terminology, procedures, equipment and facilities for women’s imaging and biopsy procedures. Must be able to anticipate and adjust to patient’s anxiety levels. Highly resourceful and has the ability to anticipate and creatively resolve problems in a collaborative and / or independent manner as appropriate. Ability to be flexible, multi- task and have persistence. Ability to work with patients from all socioeconomic levels. Commitment to providing services for patients and families.
