Medical Assistant- Pulmonology
The Medical Assistant performs basic direct patient care activities, such as lab tests, treatments, and medication / immunization administration. These are performed under the direction of the Nurse and / or the physician in preparation for the patient's examination and treatment. The incumbent carries out clerical activities, quality control activities, performance improvement initiatives, etc. in support of the physician practice as assigned. This position also serves as a resource for the clerical / clinical staff in the practice.
The Medical Assistant delivers direct and indirect patient care in accordance with hospital / physician practices policies, procedures, and protocols. They assist in collecting patient healthcare data, complete patient care treatments and testing as ordered, and comply with completeness, accuracy and timeliness of documentation. They prepare patients for examinations, treatments, and procedures, communicate pertinent information, perform clerical functions, answer telephone calls, obtain and verify patient information, and accurately enter codes and charges into the billing system. They also complete forms and letters necessary for continued patient care, provide patient safety, label patient specimens, adhere to infection control process, assist in continuous survey readiness, perform quality control monitoring functions, consistently practice National Patient Safety Goals, schedule surgery, procedures, and testing for patients, and provide pre- and post-examination education and counseling. They also prepare the exam rooms, stock supplies, perform phlebotomy procedures, and prepare charts for clinic sessions.
Required Qualifications / Experience include a high school diploma, GED or higher education, strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, sound judgment, and knowledge of legal aspects and liability of nursing practice. Preferred Qualifications / Experience include previous outpatient office experience, successful completion of Medical Assistant program or experience as a Medical Assistant for one year, or certified EMT / Paramedic under the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. License, Certification & Clearances include Act 33 with renewal, Act 34 with renewal, Act 73 FBI Clearance, and current Basic Life Support (BLS) approved curriculum of the American Heart Association (CPR and AED) program required for Southern Market.
Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need (rotate shifts, standby, on-call, etc.). Travel may be expected locally between System locations.
