Job Description and Duties

ASSOCIATE STATE ARCHEOLOGIST – COASTAL DIVISION / OCEANO DUNES

The reporting location for this position is Oceano Dunes Visitor's Center. This position will work under the general direction of the State Park Interpreter III.

The incumbent will perform the more difficult or varied work of archeological investigation and cultural resource management. This position will plan, direct, coordinate, and perform tasks associated with site investigation projects; provide research data and advice; participate in environmental review for internal projects in accordance with Public Resources Codes Section 5024, and California Environmental Quality Act when applicable; act as the tribal liaison for the District by coordinating consultations with Native American groups and individuals; prepare and submit project budget requests; may act in a lead capacity; may train departmental staff as well as other personnel (including personnel in other State, Federal, and local agencies) in archeological methods and cultural resources management techniques; may budget and administer Federal and State funds; represent the Department in cultural resource matters at meetings with governmental entities, educational institutions, and other groups; and do other related work.

Approximate work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8 : 00am-4 : 30pm. Incumbent may be required to work occasional holidays or weekends. Schedule is subject to change, based on workload needs.

Working Conditions

Work Environment includes outdoors in a sand dune environment, characterized cold and heat, frequent winds, blowing sand and dust, insects and intense off highway vehicle activity. May include driving on loose sand and off road, operation off road vehicles and equipment. Work environment may expose incumbent to noise, dust, fumes, extreme wind, hot and cold temperatures, and unpleasant odors. Work at elevated heights, or near machinery and heavy equipment or traffic. Includes uneven terrain, loose sand in both uphill and downhill conditions to perform the duties of the job. Completion of duties may involve on-foot pedestrian survey carrying heavy pack or tools and standing for long periods of time, (in excess of 2 hours). Includes an office setting, using computer, telephone, and other business equipment. Work activities may involve frequent and prolonged periods of sitting, extended telephone conversations, and keyboard operation. Move about, stand, reach, stoop or bend. Lift supply boxes up to 50 lbs. and move heavier supplies using a hand cart. Requires reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movements in the performance of daily duties. May involve some exposure to aggressive visitors.
