What We Look For In a Special Education Tutor Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, emotional and behavioral disorders, ADHD, individualized education programs, differentiated instruction, assistive technology, behavior management, and special education law including IDEA and Section 504. Ability to explain IEP development, accommodation versus modification, and evidence-based interventions while supporting diverse learners. Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at teaching specialized instructional strategies, behavior intervention planning, and individualized learning approaches. Guides students through implementing IEP goals, applying positive behavior support strategies, differentiating instruction across content areas, using assistive technology, and monitoring student progress through data collection. Emphasizes strength-based approaches and connects special education to inclusive classroom practices and transition planning. Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with special education frameworks and common challenges such as implementing accommodations consistently, managing diverse learning needs simultaneously, and supporting students with co-occurring disabilities. Adapts instruction using multisensory techniques, visual supports, and individualized pacing to support students with identified learning disabilities, developmental delays, and special educational needs across academic content areas. Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles. Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style. Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
