Overview
Engineering Director – UL Research Institutes (Remote)
The Engineering Director for the Digital Safety team will lead a growing team of software, AI engineers, and evaluators to modernize the AI / digital testing and evaluation ecosystem. You will work closely with independent review organizations and auditors to define DSRI’s research role in modernizing the greater AI / digital test and auditing ecosystem. The role collaborates with ULRI directors, leaders, and colleagues across the UL research organizations to advance the mission and growth of Digital Safety.
Responsibilities
- Lead software engineering across the Digital Safety Research Institute, focusing on creating open‑source tools for advanced independent auditing and testing.
- Use advanced independent auditing and testing tools to create experimental assessments of rapidly advancing AI / digital systems.
- In collaboration with the Executive Director of Digital Safety teams, define key performance indicators (KPIs) and embed KPI measurements into the engineering process.
- Hire, lead, and develop a high‑performing team of AI and software engineers to build prototype platforms and tools to test and evaluate AI / digital systems.
- Define and manage Digital Safety teams’ digital infrastructure needs to support research and engineering efforts.
- Manage software engineering resources to ensure MVP and updates with KPIs are delivered on time and within budget.
- Collaborate with Digital Safety leadership in strategic planning and the annual budget processes.
Qualifications
Expert knowledge in cloud and mobile application development, database management, and application testing automation.Practical knowledge of current DevSecOps and MLOps best practices applicable to Digital Safety software development and deployment.Problem‑solving skills with the ability to identify root causes and develop practical solutions in collaboration with colleagues.Experience mentoring AI and software engineers to develop needed skills.Leadership skills to create alignment and buy‑in with multiple stakeholders and deliver results.Positive, collaborative attitude and interpersonal skills to work effectively with staff at any level.High curiosity and a continuous learning mentality.Excellent written and oral communication skills, with enthusiasm to engage stakeholders.Ability to operate strategically and operationally, with attention to detail, focus on quality, speed, and outcomes.Professional Education & Experience Requirements
Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or other STEM discipline.Minimum 10 years of proven software engineering and deployment experience, including software testing.Experience managing and / or mentoring distributed software engineering teams, including open‑source developers.Experience planning, developing, deploying, monitoring production systems, and maintaining operations.Benefits
