Position Summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Physician Assistant - Neurosurgery - Per Diem. The Physician Assistant will provide care to patients in the department and in the subspecialties as needed. The Physician Assistant will follow established standards, procedures, and practices, and give specific patient care directions to nursing and other staff.

Job Responsibilities

• Provide preventive health services including counseling and teaching in Health Maintenance and related problem areas.
• Provide direct care to individuals and families consistent with the philosophy of Lutheran Medical Center and the departmental / institutional goals. This includes provision of safety, wellbeing of patients and visitors, and maintenance of patient rights and confidentiality.
• Provide diagnostic and assessment services to patients in the Department of Surgery, utilizing a problem‑solving approach : obtain a detailed history, perform physical examinations, and consider the age, growth and developmental stage of the patient. Write appropriate orders, including for narcotics, stimulants and depressant drugs after consulting with a physician. Implement a therapeutic regime or protocol appropriate for the diagnosis in accordance with institutional protocols and after consultation with the attending physician. Monitor the patient's response to the therapeutic regime and notify the attending physician of changes. Consult specialists and / or medical preceptors for complex patient care situations.
• Document all patient encounters including : patient assessment and progress notes, treatment rendered, patient teaching, follow‑up, referral.
• Maintain required unit records, reports and statistics necessary for administrative purposes and reimbursement, including discharge summaries.
• Evaluation and management of critical care patients.
• Perform emergency life‑saving procedures in the absence of a physician.
• Participate in rounds with the attending staff and / or house staff on assigned patients.
• Collaboratively work with other healthcare professionals and families of patients in the physical and emotional transitions of admissions, care and discharge.
• Participate in activities relating to Quality Improvement as needed.
• Participate in committees as appropriate.
• Attend all scheduled departmental meetings / conferences.
• Be on call during non‑working hours to assist attendings with urgent or emergent situations / procedures.
• Direct, instruct and evaluate activities of PA and medical students as appropriate.
• Participate in activities fostering professional growth and maintenance of certification.
• Practice within the scope of delineated privileges.

Minimum Qualifications

To qualify you must have a Bachelor or Master degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program and be licensed as a Physician Assistant in the State of New York. A DEA certificate and ACLS through the American Heart Association are required.

At least 1 year of relevant experience is required.

Required Licenses

Physician Assistant Lic-NYS, National COM Cert Physician Asst, Basic Life Support Cert.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced Life Support certification (ACLS, PALS) through the American Heart Association or Neonatal Resuscitation certification (NRP) through the American Academy of Pediatrics may be required based on your selected privileges.

Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
