Job description

Building Inspector

The City of New Orleans is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Building Inspector. This role involves performing administrative and technical work under the direction of the Chief Building Official, focusing on enforcing building codes and overseeing the activities of the Building Inspections staff.

Salary : $89,449.00 annually

Minimum Qualifications :

Promotional :

  • Permanent status in an inspectional job classification at pay grade 72 or higher and eight (8) years of experience performing building, mechanical, or electrical inspection work.
  • Active International Code Council (ICC) certification as a Residential Building Inspector and Commercial Building Inspector.
  • A valid driver's license.

Original Entrance :

  • Eight (8) years
  • of full-time experience doing technical building inspectional work one year of which must have been in a lead or supervisory capacity.
  • Active certifications by the International Code Council (ICC) as a Residential Building Inspector and Commercial Building Inspector. OR
  • Active certifications by the International Code Council (ICC) as a Residential Mechanical Inspector and Commercial Mechanical Inspector. OR
  • Active certifications by the International Code Council (ICC) as a Residential Electrical Inspector and Commercial Electrical Inspector. OR
  • Active certification by the International Code Council (ICC) as a Building Official
  • A Valid Driver's License
  • NOTE : A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university may be substituted for four (4) years of the required experience. OR An Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
  • If appointed, employee must be certified by the International Code Council (ICC) as a Certified Building Official during the probationary period. No probationary period may last longer than one year. If employees are not certified by the ICC during their probationary period, they must wait one year from the end of their probationary period or receive certification to be considered for rehire.
  • Applicants hired into this job classification between April 1, 2025, and March 31, 2027, are exempted from the requirement to reside in Orleans Parish.
  • Prior to appointment, the hiring agency is required to verify education, licenses, and certifications claimed by the applicant to qualify for this classification. If selected for hire, applicants must provide original documents of their qualifying credentials to the hiring agency prior to their start date in this job classification.
  • Kind of Examination :

    A rating of experience, weighted 100%. All related previous experience will be considered for qualification purposes; however, credit on the rating of training and experience will only be given for experience gained within the last ten (10) years. This is a promotional and original entrance examination.

    Domicile requirements are currently waived for the purpose of application. Residency requirements are waived for all Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans positions vacant and advertised for at least 90 days. Employees hired under this waiver remain exempt from the city's residency requirement for the duration of their employment at the Sewerage and Water Board. Additional exceptions to the domicile requirement may be made on a case-by-case basis.     A background check will be conducted for any convictions related to the responsibilities and requirements of this position. Employment will be contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation including criminal history.

    A medical examination is required for all original entrance probationary appointments to active classifications, and may be required for re-employment, promotions, and / or transfers. A medical screening, which may result in a medical examination, is required for all original entrance probationary appointments to non-active classifications.

    Good moral character is required of all applicants. Any applicant may be disqualified if his / her character or past employment record is found to be unsatisfactory as determined by the Department of City Civil Service. Forgery, misrepresentation of facts, or cheating on examinations is punishable by disqualification, fine, and other penalties.

    Veterans preference is available for veterans, disabled veterans, certain spouses and parents of veterans on original entrance examinations. To obtain credit, this form must be submitted with the required proof before the final filing date.

    High school diplomas and general equivalency diplomas (GED) must be issued by a state Department of Education or an institution recognized by a state Department of Education. Certificates of completion, high school diplomas, and GED from institutions not recognized by a state Department of Education are not acceptable.

    Accredited colleges and universities must be accredited by an organization recognized by the United States Department of Education. College diplomas from foreign countries will be accepted if the applicant submits a statement of educational equivalency from one of the evaluation services accepted by the Department of Civil Service.

    Experience credit will be granted for related provisional appointments (internal applicants). Offers of employment or promotion are required to be withdrawn for applicants who are found to have misrepresented their credentials during the application process.
