Nursery and Children's Education Worker - Calvary Baptist Church
Status : non-exempt, hourly, at-will employee
Hours : 2 – 3 hours on Sundays; occasional special events, Holiday Services
Reports to : Minister of Students, Families and Congregational Life (primarily) and Pastor of Communications, Faith Formation, Missions and Membership (secondarily)
Performance Review : After 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, then annually
Job Summary : Working in the church’s nursery and children’s classrooms, works collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and parents to foster a welcoming, safe community for infants, toddlers, and Pre-K children. Provides for the physical, emotional and intellectual stimulation and safety of children 0-5 years as they learn that they are loved by God and to learn how to love one another. Staff members may occasionally be asked to support the K-5th grade area and older children. Nursery / classroom will typically have 5-8 children. One classroom opens at 8 : 30 a.m., the other at 9 : 00 a.m. The worship service is generally over about 11 : 30 a.m.

Job Duties :
Serve as greeter for children and parents, providing a reassuring and welcoming presenceActively engage with children, setting up age-appropriate activities, including songs, stories, lessons and craftsEstablish trusting relationships with staff, volunteers, children, and parents, including supporting parents and engaging children who may have special educational, social, or health needsProvide physical, emotional and intellectual support and stimulation to each child in our careUse appropriate language when correcting a child’s behaviorsSensitively share behavioral concerns with parentsDoes not engage in the corporal / physical punishment of any child; follow guidelines for disciplining in other more constructive waysGive each child the attention needed to assure his / her best welfare. (This relates to eating, toileting, sleeping, playing, working, health care, safety, etc.)o Responsible for feeding children in accordance with parental instructions
o Maintain children’s nap schedule as needed
o Change diapers and provide potty training as needed
o Calvary does not administer medications for children
Ensure framework of safety is carefully followedFollow specified procedures should an injury occur to a child while in Calvary’s careFollow emergency procedures calmly and efficiently should an emergency event occurMaintain a clean and orderly room, including cleaning up the room after the morning is complete, and maintain good handwashing and hygiene practicesInform Minister of needed supplies or repairs in the classroomsIn addition to Sunday mornings, coverage may be needed for special events such as Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Annual Gathering, and other all-church eventsProficiencies :
Working with infants / young children – must to be able to intuit what children need and provide accordingly or offer other options as appropriateCPR / AED training (training available through Calvary if needed)Be in good health, able to bend, stoop, lift, and physically take care of childrenTimely arrival to workReliable arrival to workEarly childhood education experience preferredNo cell phone use during children’s presence except in an emergencyCommunication with staff preferred via email and text Background check required.Willing to Learn :
