Job description

Position Summary :

The Project Engineer II (SPE) works closely with the Project Manager to support and manage the structural design process from project inception through to construction. In this role, the SPE is responsible for conducting structural analysis, preparing detailed plans and specifications, and reviewing contractor submittals, shop drawings, and RFIs to ensure compliance with the design intent. The SPE mentors junior engineers and BIM technicians, providing guidance on project work and technical aspects. The SPE is also responsible for facilitating communication and coordination among clients, project architects, municipal agencies, and other members of the design team to ensure the structural design aligns with project objectives and complies with regulatory standards. In this capacity, the SPE actively engages in client calls, providing technical expertise and contributing to project discussions.

Competencies :

Engineering Skills and Responsibilities :

  • Strong knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, materials, and procedures within the field of structural engineering and how to apply to projects.
  • Designs, formulates plans, and supervises the production work of junior engineers.
  • Writes clear summaries and memos of own work.
  • Identifies project issues and presents solutions to junior teammates.
  • Reviews the shop drawings to ensure alignment with the architectural and structural design plans. Confirms that the materials, dimensions, and methods of fabrication meet the project's technical requirements. Looks for any differences or errors between the shop drawings and the original design documents. Marks up corrections where necessary and approves the drawings once they meet the design and safety criteria.
  • Understands and implements selected approach in all areas of project and directs junior engineers.
  • Accurately implements Design Criteria.
  • Independently performs analyses and design with little direction.
  • Extensive knowledge on most codes and understands how codes impact design.
  • Ensures that each completed project meets local codes, regulations, and quality standards.
  • Thoroughly and efficiently organizes materials for review by supervisor prior to drafting or typing.
  • Performs accurate backchecking of project documentation.
  • Designs structural elements of each project using computer software like Rhino, Revit, RISA, ETABS, SAP, and RAM.
  • Ensures accuracy and precision with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Developing critical thinking and analytical skills by learning to assess situations and break issues into manageable parts, evaluate possible solutions and make informed decisions.
  • Understands of the importance of building the client and business relationship.

Client and Communication Skills :

  • Effectively communicates, both verbally and written, to ensure clear and effective interactions with all parties including clients, teammates and management

  • Facilitates communication between clients, architects and other members of the design team.
  • Business Development and Revenue Generation :

  • Learning the importance of resource utilization, project budget and collected revenue / labor ratios and how to ensure they are given correct consideration
  • Assistance in cost and personnel estimating as well as proposal preparation
  • Works with scope items and accurately charges own labor to proper project numbers
  • Participates in providing input concerning project budgeting and collections
  • Contributes to Business Development efforts through developing positive and professional client relationships
  • Actively support the business with Business Development initiatives
  • Begin developing network of contacts
  • Teamwork and Leadership :

  • Mentors and trains junior teammates, providing guidance on project work and technical aspects
  • Understands and complies with the company values and culture code
  • Develops effective motivational strategies and supports the team to achieve high performance and excellent outcomes

  • Internal Operations :

  • Complies with business requirements such as completion of timesheets, correct utilization of project codes, completion of required training.
  • Complies with Health, Safety and Environmental requirements, internally and on client sites, where applicable.
  • Works with other teams, including Shared Services, to ensure business goals and objectives are achieved.
  • Minimum (Required) Qualifications :

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil or Structural Engineering or related field and seven (7) years of relevant experience in structural analysis and design of mid to high-rise buildings, including project management; or
  • Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering or related field and five (5) years of relevant experience in structural analysis and design of mid to high-rise buildings, including project management.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in performing and supervising the design and analysis of mid to high rise buildings.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience utilizing software packages such as ETABS, RAM, RISA, Rhino, PCA and SAFE.
  • Minimum 5 years of Experience with preparing structural models and extract data for wind tunnel testing, applying wind tunnel loads to the structural model, and understanding the supplemental damping strategies.
  • Minimum (Required) Skills :

  • Extensive knowledge of local and national building codes and design practices.
  • Knowledge of standard construction practices and the ability to work with contractors to address construction issues.
  • Detail oriented with strong interpersonal, problem solving and team skills.
  • Deep knowledge of construction materials and methodologies.
  • Proven drafting skills, exemplified by a portfolio of prior work.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Preferred Qualifications and Skills :

  • Master’s Degree in Civil, Structural Engineering or related field.
  • Professional Engineer’s (PE) license.
  • Experience working in Grasshopper.
  • At DeSimone, we believe in transparency when it comes to salary and hourly rates for our job postings. Our pay range represents the range of salaries or hourly rates that we think, in good faith, we might be willing to pay, for the posted job in the specified location(s).

    This position is classified as salaried, exempt. The hiring salary range for this role is anticipated to be $90,000-$110,000 dependent upon experience and qualifications.

    For this particular position, we expect to hire near the middle of the range. To be considered for this role, we are looking for candidates with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil or Structural Engineering or related field and seven (7) years of relevant experience in structural analysis and design of mid to high-rise buildings, including project management; or Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering or related field and five (5) years of relevant experience in structural analysis and design of mid to high-rise buildings, including project management.

    We understand that there may be rare and exceptional circumstances where an external candidate has experience, credentials, or expertise that far exceed those required or expected for the position. In these cases, we may consider paying a salary or rate near the higher end of the range.
