A Brief Summary of This Position

The Crane Operator is an individual contributor responsible for the operation of overhead bridge cranes. The incumbent is responsible for securing loads and moving suspended loads throughout the department by operating the remote-controlled bridge cranes.

Essential Functions

• Determine load weights and check them against lifting capacities in order to prevent overload
• Use remotes (speed and direction control buttons) to operate cranes for lifting, moving, and placing loads
• Inspect cables and grappling devices for wear
• Inspect crane mechanisms and lifting accessories to prevent malfunctions and damage
• Review daily work and delivery schedules to determine orders, sequences of deliveries, and special loading instructions
• A thorough knowledge of rigging and moving procedures and practices are essential to ensure safety and quality of product
• Keep other workers supplied with materials, tools, and supplies
• Set up and operate a variety of grinding machines; grind metal work pieces according to knowledge of grinding procedures
• Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Other duties as required and / or assigned

Important Details about the Role

Make mathematical calculations in preparing product or setting up the machinery. Setup, operate, and perform general maintenance of equipment. Accountable and responsible for essential tools and equipment provided along with the maintenance of these tools and equipment. Actively participates in department safety, demonstrates excellent safety practices and behaviors which conform to all Valmont safety policies and procedures. This position reports to the Production Supervisor.

Working Conditions & Physical Efforts

Work is primarily performed in an indoor shop environment. This position will be exposed to all hazards located at manufacturing sites including noise, fumes, excessive heat / cold, dust, welding arc, all chemicals associated with the manufacturing areas, smoke and confined spaces. Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time. The job requires safety glasses, hearing protection, and metatarsal safety shoes be worn at all times. The employee must be able to spend the entire work shift on their feet within the shop environment. The incumbent must also be able to wear the required personal protective equipment (PPE) for working in the production facility.

Hazards

This job requires handling metal objects some of which have sharp edges. Extreme care and awareness should be taken for all production jobs. Below are some common hazards that exist for this particular position. Set up and run of equipment provides the potential for injury through slips, falls, strains, pinch points, tripping hazards, shot blasting equipment, high pressure air nozzles, material handling equipment.
