Firefighter
Statement of Duties : Performs skilled work in fire suppression, fire prevention, the saving of life and property in fighting fires and other emergency functions, performs emergency care to victims of fires or accidents, reports fire hazards in the municipality when discovered. Supervision Works under the general supervision of a Fire Captain and / or a Fire Lieutenant. Job Environment : Some work is performed at the fire station. Most work is performed at firefighting operations, under varying weather conditions, and under conditions which may involve considerable personal danger, with exposure to fumes or toxic substances, noise, vibration, mechanical or electrical hazards, atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system, oils and use of self-contained breathing apparatus or respirator. Operates a computer and general office equipment. Operates department vehicles, radios, command consoles and all related equipment. Operates hand and power tools. Makes regular contact with municipal employees in all departments; Makes regular contact with the public. Contact is by telephone, in person, and by email. Errors in either technical application of recognized maintenance and fire suppression procedures could seriously endanger life and property, monetary loss, reduced levels of service, confusion, and delay in the provision of services and could have legal and / or financial repercussions for the City.
Essential Functions : The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. - Duties are varied and diversified involving the knowledge and ability to operate firefighting, rescue, emergency care, and communications equipment.
- Considerable judgment and resourcefulness are required when responding to emergencies and fires.
- May exercise supervision over other firefighters.
- Operates various pieces of fire department apparatus such as pumpers, tankers and ladder trucks.
- Operates routine and specialized fire department equipment such as rescue equipment, first aid equipment, hazardous materials, equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus.
- Is proficient in working with fire hose, ground ladders, and other fire department equipment. Works with charged hose lines, uses fire extinguishers, foam, directs water streams, sets up and works with portable equipment such as fire pumps and lighting units.
- Makes forces entries and performs rescues or assists in the rescue of persons utilizing all rescue equipment in the department when required.
- Administers emergency first aid to victims at accidents or fire victims.
- Performs salvage and overhaul operations.
- Performs housework within the fire station as required.
- Performs training drills, planned study, aids in pre-fire plans and inspections.
- Performs minor repairs to the municipal fire alarm system, under supervision when required.
- Performs daily and weekly check out of assigned department apparatus.
- Performs minor vehicle maintenance of assigned apparatus, tools and equipment.
- Maintains assigned apparatus in a state of cleanliness.
- Other duties as assigned.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications :
Must be at least 18 years of age.High school diploma or equivalent.Member must be in good physical condition to meet the physical requirements of the position.Special Requirements :

Position requires the ability to operate computer keyboard and standard office equipment.Prolonged periods in a stationary position.Physical strength to move and push object up to 50lbs.Exposure to fire, smoke, and dangerous chemicals and poisonous gases.Must be able to move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces.Occasionally ascends / descends a ladder.Must be able to work in cold and hot environments.Ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand.Ability to observe items at a close range.Ability to adjust focus at close and distant vision.Use of hand and power tools.
