Job Purpose
The Adult Education Instructor (ESL) assists adult learners in both community and correctional settings to achieve literacy, obtain their high school equivalency, and develop English language skills necessary for employment, education, and self-sufficiency. This position provides research-based instruction in reading, writing, math, and English as a Second Language, integrates workforce readiness into instruction, and offers case management and support services to individuals facing barriers to employment or education.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources, education, organizational development, or related field.
- Experience working with adult learners is required; one year of experience in case management or vocational services.
Clearances
Ability to obtain acceptable results for required background checks, including but not limited to Act 151 Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance, Pennsylvania Criminal History Check, and Department of Human Services- FBI Fingerprints.
Other Requirements
Valid driver’s license, with a clean driving record, and / or dependable transportation, which can be used for work.
Supervision
Received : Works under the direction of the Coordinator of Adult Education with independence in performing responsibilities consistent with agency policy.

Skills, Abilities, Duties, and Core Responsibilities
Knowledge of and ability to perform current best practices in the delivery of instruction and workforce development services and acceptance of Goodwill's Philosophy Concerning People Served.Knowledge of and ability to interpret human behavior, and basic knowledge of effective behavior management techniques.Sound professional judgment, adequate to formulate realistic leadership lesson plans, and counseling participants regarding work related issues.Ability to assess a student's educational level.Thorough knowledge and acceptance of principles of education and customer service.Ability to create and deliver interactive, hands-on lesson plans to appeal to a variety of learning styles.Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing using English. Ability to give public presentations.Ability to relate effectively to others, including co-workers, agency participants, supervisors and community contacts.Valid Pennsylvania driver's license, with a clean driving record. Instruction and Curriculum Development
Provide initial and ongoing assessment of student abilities and skill levels.Deliver instruction using varied methods to accommodate different learning styles and abilities.Incorporate College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) into lesson plans and curricula.Create lesson plans with clearly sequenced, CCRS-aligned objectives.Assist adult learners in achieving educational goals, including GED / high school equivalency completion.Provide instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, and workforce preparation skills.Offer computer-based and distance learning opportunities when appropriate.Ensure curriculum and instructional strategies remain current and relevant.Recruitment, Outreach, and Communication
Assist with recruitment of adult learners through community outreach and presentations.Coordinate with schools, agencies, and partners to refer and retain students.Meet with each student weekly to monitor progress and provide support.Maintain open communication with team members to ensure wraparound support.Student Support and Case Management
Provide case management and vocational support to individuals with barriers to employment.Assist with addressing barriers to attendance such as childcare and transportation.Offer individual and group counseling, mentoring, and work readiness training.Support students in developing soft skills including communication, punctuality, and professionalism.Connect students to the PA CareerLink and community resources for continued support.Coordinate with staff and funding partners to develop individualized service plans.Provide career planning and short-term pre-vocational services.Conduct follow-up services to ensure ongoing success in employment or education.Data, Compliance, and Reporting
Collect, enter, and maintain data in the system of record accurately and in a timely manner.Maintain all files and documentation in compliance with confidentiality and funding requirements.Ensure activities comply with grant and contract regulations, including documentation, data entry, and reporting.Monitor and ensure that programs meet or exceed required performance standards.Participate in program improvement efforts and provide feedback to leadership.Employer and Community Engagement
Contact employers as needed to assist students with job placement using job development techniques.Maintain records of employer contacts and present available incentives when applicable.Provide students with labor market information and local employment data.Represent Goodwill and program participants positively within the community.Professional Development
