Position Summary :
Provide direct patient care under the supervision of UNMH Lifeguard Medical Director. Operates within scope of practice as defined by New Mexico Bureaus of Emergency Medical Services, UNMH Lifeguard approved Special Skills, and UNMH Lifeguard approved advanced patient care protocols and clinical procedures. Works in conjunction with Lifeguard Registered Nurses, Lifeguard Medial Director, or UNMH Emergency Services Fellows. Serve as a role model to promote positive work environment and quality patient care. Function as a patient advocate. Participate in research, quality, and program outreach initiatives. Ensure adherence to hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric age groups.
Detailed responsibilities :
- RELATED WORK - Perform related duties and responsibilities as required
- ALS - Provide advanced life support to include oral / nasal endotracheal intubation, needle thoracostomy, needle / surgical cricothyroidotomy, introsseous catheter insertion, pericardiocentesis; perform 12-lead EKG's and chemical blood glucose tests
- PATIENT CARE - Assessing and monitoring patient condition, and in conjunction with RN team member, devising appropriate plan of care based upon information gathered
- PATIENT CARE - POC and other appropriate testing as approved by Lifeguard Medical Director and New Mexico Bureau of Emergency Medical Services
- PATIENT CARE - Assessment of test results and laboratory values for purpose of adjusting patient therapy within protocol guidelines and discussion with RN team member
- PROCEDURES - Perform advanced procedures within scope of practice and authorized special skills including but not limited to operation of advanced equipment
- DOCUMENTATION - Document all patient care and treatment rendered using Lifeguard PCR and EMR processes
- COMMUNICATION - Communicate patient information with appropriate healthcare providers related to patient assessment and treatments provided by transport team
- PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols
- PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes
- PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report / correct environmental conditions and / or situations that may put a patient at undue risk
- PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and / or near misses in a timely manner
- PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"
