Unit Description – Labor, Delivery, Recovery & Postpartum (LDRP) Unit

Type of Care Provided :

Comprehensive obstetric care from admission through delivery, recovery, and postpartum discharge

Care for both low-risk and high-risk pregnancies

Support for vaginal, cesarean, and VBAC deliveries

Patient Population :

Adult women (antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum)

Newborns (including immediate post-delivery care)

Culturally diverse patient base

Unit Capacity : 15 beds and 11 rooms

Average daily census of 15–20 patients

Common Diagnoses / Conditions :

Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia

Preterm labor and premature rupture of membranes

Placenta previa and placental abruption

Gestational diabetes

Multiple gestations

Postpartum hemorrhage and complications

Nursing Responsibilities :

Triage and monitor laboring patients

Perform and interpret fetal monitoring (EFM / IUPC)

Administer magnesium sulfate, oxytocin, and other obstetric medications

Circulate and assist during cesarean sections

Manage postpartum recovery and newborn care

Provide patient and family education on breastfeeding and infant care

Team and Support Services :

Collaboration with obstetricians, anesthesiologists, and pediatric teams

24 / 7 provider coverage including anesthesia and neonatal support

Access to pharmacy, respiratory therapy, radiology, and rapid response teams

Systems and Equipment :

Documentation : EPIC and OBIX

Medication Management : Pyxis

Communication : SBAR

Fetal monitoring systems and emergency response equipment available

Certifications Required :

BLS, NRP, FHM, AWHONN Intermediate

ACLS and AWHONN Advanced preferred

Staffing and Scheduling :

12-hour shifts (days 06 : 00–18 : 30 / nights 18 : 00–06 : 30)

Ratio typically 1 : 1–1 : 3 depending on acuity

Call and floating required to meet unit needs

Block scheduling; no 4x12s allowed

Orientation and Other Details :

40-hour orientation (3 shifts)

Scrubs provided

First-time travelers not accepted
