About The Role

The EH&S Manager is responsible for serving as a staff specialist environmental, health, safety, and worker's compensation. The EH&S Manager leads the safety initiative by increasing safety awareness and reducing work-related accidents and injuries. The EH&S Manager creates and implements programs, policies, and procedures in the organization to effectively control accident and health exposures in the company that meet or exceed compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.

Key Job Accountabilities

As part of the production team, you'll be responsible for :

  • Assisting employees in understanding OSHA regulations and standards, including guidance and handling OSHA compliance, inspections and citations; prepare and submit required OSHA, DOT, and ADEM reports.
  • Evaluating and communicating hazardous conditions and practices; developing hazard control practices and programs.
  • Monitoring company's accident statistics and making recommendations for correction of problem areas; preparing monthly safety stats for review.
  • Participating and leading employee improvement teams to emphasize safety, housekeeping, and waste / cost reduction; promoting programs and encouraging employee participation.
  • Maintaining accurate and complete Environmental, Health and Safety records in accordance with governing regulations and company policies. Ensuring that OSHA record-keeping and reporting requirements are met.
  • Ensuring the timely and cost-effective medical treatment of injured employees and the resolution of their worker's compensation cases.
  • Developing, implementing, and communicating policies, procedures and standards while ensuring conformance with regulatory requirements, corporate policies and organizational objectives.
  • Partnering with the Human Resources department on employee relations issues, worker's compensation, and medical leaves of absences.
  • Overseeing case management of Workers Compensation cases. Working closely with insurance providers and adjustors to ensure timely and safe return to work for injured employees.
  • Coordinating safety and industrial hygiene services of insurance carriers to obtain optimum service.
  • Assessing new developments in the health and safety field that may have application to the company's operations.
  • Conducting incident / accident investigations including "root cause analysis" for corrective action. Training management personnel on incident investigations and proper documentation. Primary contact for OSHA inspections and incident / accident audits.
  • Organizing, maintaining, and chairing the employee Safety Committee; conducting Safety Meetings and keeping employees current on safety performance; conducting safety training as needed.
  • Conducting EHS program training for all employees. Developing and conducting new training programs as needed. Participating in new hire orientation process by conducting required safety training.
  • Implementing an effective ergonomic improvement process; seeking, identifying, and eliminating any deterrent to maximum work capacity; limiting worker fatigue and discomfort while improving process efficiency and productivity.
  • Facilitating on-the-job training to assure new hires are in the correct job with the right tools and instruction to perform their jobs safely and effectively.
  • Conducting Safety Orientation of all new hires; mentoring and following up on all new hires during trail period to gather safety ideas and evaluate safety culture.
  • Maintaining a regular presence on the production floor to develop a rapport with all employees and assist with employee inquiries around plant safety goals and metrics.
  • Responsible for preparing, maintaining, and updating environmental policy, procedures; reviews all work instructions to ensure that all safety issues are identified and properly documented.
  • Serving as primary contact with all federal, state, and local regulatory bodies; interfacing between regulatory bodies and, corporate personnel, insurance representatives, legal and others in order to ensure all requirements are met.
  • Maintaining SDS program and ensuring that all employees are trained in their use. Monitoring and approving all chemicals that are used in the plant to ensure proper use, labeling and storage.
  • Investigating accidents to identify their causes and develop countermeasures to prevent them in the future.
  • Conducting quarterly Operation Clean Sweep audits and report finding in GDC.
  • Developing and reporting monthly EHS Metrics to leadership.
  • Updating Safety and EHS Framework boards on a monthly basis and reporting updates to management team.
  • Performing other related functions and duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications / Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Safety Management, Engineering, Business Management, or related field preferred or the equivalent experience in safety in a manufacturing environment; high school diploma or GED required. Professional certification in Environmental, Health, and Safety preferred. Three to five years of experience as a safety leader, preferably in a manufacturing environment; experience in a Human Resource environment is desirable. Basic computer skills plus a working knowledge of computer software applications for word processing and spreadsheet applications. Well-versed in state and federal laws, policies and regulations pertaining to Occupational Safety and Health, Worker's compensation, and employment practices. Strong oral and written communication skills and presentation skills including the ability to prepare the presentation. Must be able to work independently on multiple tasks while dealing with frequent interruptions. Ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management. Experience in a manufacturing environment required. Develop workable implementation plans; communicate changes effectively; build commitment and overcomes resistance; prepare and support those affected by change. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills. Ability to adhere to Berry's Safety, Health, and Environmental Vision, Policy, and Standards. Primarily a day shift office position with a flexible work schedule. Ability to stand, sit, kneel, bend, stoop, climb, reach, and crawl for extended periods multiple times per day. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds unassisted. Ability to work in warm, humid, and cool climates. Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) which includes safety glasses, safety goggles, hearing protection, steel toe shoes / boots, face shield, gloves, and face mask.

What We Want From You

A Bachelors degree in EHS, engineering, or related field highly preferred. A minimum of 5 years relevant manufacturing experience. 5+ years experience or involvement in EHS. Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) is a plus.
