We are looking for a skilled and detail-oriented Senior Accountant to join our team in Oakland, California. In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining the financial integrity of our real estate portfolio, which includes affordable housing and commercial properties. You will collaborate closely with the Controller and Director of Finance to ensure accurate financial reporting, tax compliance, and effective budget management.
Responsibilities :
- Assist in preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for the real estate portfolio, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of all accounting transactions.
- Support financial reporting for funders, the board of directors, and other stakeholders.
- Manage general and sub-ledgers for real estate assets, including accounts payable, receivable, and bank reconciliations.
- Process real estate invoices, prepare and post journal entries for rent revenue, property taxes, insurance, and maintenance expenses.
- Contribute to developing and managing annual budgets, cash flow projections, and project proformas.
- Perform variance analyses, identify trends, and recommend budget adjustments.
- Analyze financial data to identify opportunities across the real estate portfolio and assist in preparing feasibility studies, projections, and grant or financing proposals.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls to ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and regulations related to affordable housing and commercial real estate.
- Support management of banking relationships, JV financial reporting, and risk identification for real estate projects.
- Assist in preparing and filing tax returns, property tax exemptions, and audit documentation for real estate entities.
- Coordinate with auditors and lead audit preparation to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
- Participate in meetings, training, and special projects as needed.
- Attend required in-person meetings (2–4 days per month), complete performance reviews, and engage in monthly professional development.
- Maintain organized documentation, complete administrative reporting, and meet regularly with supervisors to review performance and goals.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
- High attention to detail and accuracy in financial work.
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and financial software such as QuickBooks or Yardi.
- Effective at managing time, prioritizing tasks, and meeting deadlines under pressure.
- Able to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Knowledge of affordable housing, commercial real estate development, property valuation, and asset management.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Real Estate required.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in accounting or finance, including at least 1 year in real estate.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Proven ability to adapt to changing priorities and thrive in a fast-paced, remote work environment.
