Experience : One year of professional nursing experience preferred

License : Current licensure in the state of employment

Must-Have :

Graduate from an accredited college, university, or nursing program with a degree / diploma in nursing.

Description :

The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care.

This includes executing Licensed Independent Provider orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting in examinations and treatment of patients.

Applies nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care, treatment, and referrals of inmates / residents.

Performs all technical and clinical procedures within the scope of education and licensure.

Applies appropriate nursing skills in the care and treatment of inmates / residents.

Attends sick call with the physician to assess inmates / residents and prepare for examinations.

Prepares examining rooms and equipment for patient evaluations.

Dispenses medication and documents as required by applicable policies and procedures.

Calls Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders, as well as other emergencies.

Examines and assesses new inmates / residents with illnesses or injuries.

Refers inmates / residents to the emergency room or other healthcare facilities as required.

Performs emergency procedures as needed and notifies Licensed Independent Provider for treatment orders.

Assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel.

Schedules as needed per the client scheduling policy.

Monitors inmate / resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases whenever appropriate.

Provides guidance, supervision, and monitoring of nursing care provided by licensed vocational / practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff.

Maintains a good working relationship with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside agencies.

Utilizes established policies and procedures in making decisions but uses sound independent judgment.

Regularly evaluates the provision of medical services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication of those services.

Maintains absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records.

Assists with the review of medical files to ensure all provided services are documented.

Closely monitors all potential catastrophic illnesses.

Audits pharmacy use for adherence to formulary, as directed or required.

Complies with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances.

Observes and records inmate / resident behavior as necessary.

Inspects the medical unit for items that could be used as contraband; securely stores or safely disposes of supplies and equipment.

Provides health counseling and education on an individual or group basis as required.

Assists in preparing and maintaining a variety of standard narrative, statistical, summary, and operational records.

Reads, analyzes, comprehends, and interprets medical and technical procedures and legal documents.

Processes and responds to lawsuits, attending court hearings when necessary.

Evaluates and recommends safety requirements necessary to provide a safe working environment.

Facilitates accreditation of the medical program by providing the required level of efficiency and appropriate medical services.

Prepares and disseminates safety and accident reports as required by policies and procedures.

Takes appropriate action in cases of serious incidents and emergencies.

Escorts or coordinates the movement of inmates / residents for medical treatment.

Performs searches of people and objects capable of concealing contraband.

Engages in functions in confined areas, including working rotating shifts.

Checks doors and windows to verify they are secure.

Takes appropriate action to prevent or diffuse potentially disruptive situations.

Performs rescue functions during accidents, emergencies, and disasters, including administering basic emergency medical aid.
