General Statement of Duties : Performs a variety of duties related to the coordination of the Victim Services Program for the Montrose County Sheriff's Office and provides services to the Montrose Police Department on an on-call basis. These duties include, but are not limited to contacting victims of crimes defines in Victim Rights Act (VRA) to officer immediate assistance, support, information, and resource information.

Supervision Received : The work is performed under the general direction and supervision of a Patrol Sergeant and / or Team Supervisor while some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative.

Supervision Exercised : Has supervisory responsibility over Victim Services Program volunteers and Victim Services Program staff.

Essential Functions : Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all duties which may be found in positions of this class. The Montrose County Sheriff and / or Undersheriff reserve the right to modify or change the duties or essential functions of this job at any time.

• Assists victims in regaining their physical and emotional well being by means of intervention and advocacy.
• Assesses the needs of victims and makes the appropriate referrals and necessary follow-up.
• Provides for rights of victims as indicated in the Colorado Constitutional Amendment legislating victim rights.
• Provides updated resource information for victims.
• Keeps victims informed of the status of their case.
• Assists victims with the return of their property. Collects data pertinent to assisting the victims with recovery processes.
• Informs victims of the Victim Compensation Fund.
• Assists victims complete the Victim Compensation Fund application.
• Assists victims with completing and filing protection orders.
• Assists the Montrose County Detention Center with notifying the victims of the release of the defendant from custody pending prosecution.
• Coordinates with victims and the District Attorney's Office on all VRA cases.
• Accompanies victims to court proceedings.
• Serves as a Child Protection Team member for the Department of Health and Human Services.
• Serves as an Adult Protection Team member for the Department of Health and Human Services.
• Serves as a member of the 7th Judicial District Child Advocacy Center's Multidisciplinary Team.
• Serves as a member of the Montrose SART.
• Coordinates with the District Attorney's Office, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Montrose Police Department's Victim Advocate, and the Probation Department.
• Available on a 24-hour, on-call basis.
• Regular and predictable attendance is required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

Education : High School graduate or equivalent. Associate's Degree in related field.

Experience : One (1) year of experience including work with the public on a regular basis.

Required Knowledge :

• Ability to perform the duties of the position with an open, non-judgmental regard for victims.
• Ability to remain sensitive and supportive to victims without becoming emotionally involved in their problems.
• Ability to be an advocate for victims.
• Full knowledge and understanding of the Colorado Constitutional Amendment authorizing victim rights.
• Ability to understand and interpret the investigation and court process and to present information and instruction.

Language Skills : Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Interpersonal Skills : Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with victims, law enforcement agencies, representatives of the court, community agencies, and other county department staff.

Computer Skills : Modern office technology and equipment, including computers and related software applications. Working knowledge of database manipulation, spread sheets, and word-processing. Learn specific software associated with the position and / or organization.

Physical Demands : The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

• Frequent use of eye, hand, and finger coordination enabling the use of automated office machinery and utensils.
• Constant verbal and auditory interaction to enable interpersonal communication, including use of automated devices such as the telephone, as well as personal interaction with public.
• Spends 80% of time sitting, 10% standing, 10% walking while on the job.
• Occasionally stoops, kneels, crouches, and balances while filing or operating machinery.
• Frequently uses visual capacity enabling completion of required office duties.
• Occasionally lifts or carries up to 20 lbs. when moving office supplies or files.

Special Requirements : Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record. Must be able to work on-call on a 24-hour basis.
