The CORRECTIONS TECHNICIAN position is full-time, 40 hours (plus regular required overtime) on a rotating shift basis (day / swing / night), Civil Service, and Union represented. Veterans and those who have never worked in the field are encouraged to apply.
The Columbia County Sheriff's Office is looking for entry-level Corrections Technician to be a part of the team dedicated to solving community problems, the reduction of crime, and the preservation of laws, ordinances and the constitutional rights of all people within our jurisdiction.

This position works in the secure portion of the County Jail, in the Control Room, which is a small, enclosed working area located at the secured center of the Jail pods (the cells in which the inmates reside). The Corrections Technicians are not sworn law enforcement officers and are prohibited from having direct physical contact with inmates. However, the Technicians regularly have contact with inmates over the intercom system.
The Control Room contains a computer and software system that controls facility access to include opening and securing doors. The Technician's responsibility is to remotely control all access (for employees, inmates and visitors) throughout the entire facility, but especially in the secure portion of the Jail. The Technician is normally required to stay in the Control Room during the work shift (except for scheduled meals and scheduled breaks). The Technician cannot leave the Control Room without being relieved by another employee. The Technician cannot have any contact with inmates when coming or going to the Control Room.
The Columbia County Jail is a year-round, 24 / 7 operation and as such, the Technician can be assigned to work as scheduled. Work on holidays and weekends is required. The Corrections Technicians communicate with the Corrections Deputies on duty via radio. After a training period, the Technician is usually on shift in the secure Control Room alone.
DUTIES : Perform support duties to maintain the security and welfare of adults in custody in the Columbia County Jail (CCJ). Monitor and operate the automated security system and safely control access and movement throughout CCJ. Ensure control of jail security through voice and automated locking devices.
EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE : Equivalent to a high school diploma with additional law enforcement training. Any satisfactory combination of experience and training, which demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be substituted for the above requirements.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS : Previous experience in a correctional setting preferred. Team player willing to work collaboratively toward shared goals and be open to diverse ideas and perspectives. Receive constructive feedback in a positive manner.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS : Possession of, or ability to obtain a first aid / CPR card within three months of hire. Must possess a valid driver's license and be insurable under the county's liability policy.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY : Knowledge of the function, organization, purpose, and procedures of a correctional facility. Knowledge of record keeping procedures and general office practices.
Skill in various business software and Microsoft Office products.
