Job description

Utility Maintenance Technician

6-month initial contract

Shift : 4 10hr day Mon-Thur or Tue-Fri

Base pay range : $37.00 / hr - $49.00 / hr

The Role

The senior utility maintenance technician plays a crucial role in overseeing and managing the maintenance and operation of utility systems across our campus. They support a team of technicians and ensure the efficient and reliable functioning of utility equipment. This role requires extensive knowledge of utility systems and strong leadership and problem-solving skills.

Here's What You'll Do

  • Own uptime for site utilities : pH neutralization systems, RODI generation & distribution, HVAC, chilled / hot water, compressed air / inert gases, vacuum, lab / process exhaust, and building hydronic systems.
  • Troubleshoot from symptoms to root cause : read P&IDs, trend / compare BMS data, validate field readings, and prove fixes with before / after data.
  • Run RODI systems end-to-end : pretreatment, storage & loop circulation, chemical sanitization, and TOC / conductivity / micro trend reviews.
  • Operate and maintain pH neutralization : verify probe health & calibration, manage acid / caustic feeds, trend influent / effluent, and document excursions.
  • Diagnose flow / pressure / temp / humidity issues (filters, valves, coils, sensors, VFDs, damper logic).
  • Pumps & motors : align and commission pumps (mechanical / laser alignment), replace seals / bearings, perform vibration checks, and set VFD parameters.
  • Plumbing & piping : perform line breaks safely, rebuild valves / PRVs, sweat / braze / thread / propress as allowed, and pressure test to spec.
  • BMS operations : create / interpret trends, execute point-to-point checkout, validate sequences of operation, identify loop tuning issues, and partner with controls to implement safe changes.
  • Maintain accurate work orders, equipment history, parts usage, and inventory in the CMMS with GDP / ALCOA+ quality.
  • Write and improve procedures : draft / own SOPs / MOPs for utility tasks (sanitizations, calibrations, startups / shutdowns), and train / mentor junior techs on them.
  • Contractor oversight : scope work, control permits, review service reports and create follow-up WOs, and accept equipment back into service.
  • Critical spares & inventory : own min / max levels for utility spares (pumps, seals, sensors, VFDs, valves); reconcile CMMS stock; manage obsolescence and vendor lead times.
  • Safety first : LOTO, hazard assessments, chemical handling, and incident-free execution in clean and non-GMP areas.

Here's What You'll Need

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical certifications or vocational training is preferred.
  • Military training equivalent of above is acceptable.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex issues and develop effective solutions.
  • Proficient P&IDs, one-lines, data sheets, and O&M manuals; basic electrical troubleshooting (control circuits, VFD parameters, sensor wiring).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical information to team members and stakeholders.
  • Physical stamina and ability to perform manual labor.
  • Minimum of 5 years of proven experience in maintaining and troubleshooting utilities systems in a pharmaceutical or similar regulated environment.
  • This position is site-based, requiring full-time presence at Moderna's site. Remote work is not available.
  • In-depth knowledge of utility systems, including RODI, pH neutralization, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
  • HVAC / AHU depth : air handling, lab exhaust, valves / actuators, coils, sensors, and VFD diagnostics; able to prove fixes with trend data and field readings.
  • Strong pumps / motors / plumbing skills : alignments, seals / bearings, valve rebuilds, pressure / leak tests, and safe line breaks.
  • Nice to have : MA Wastewater Operator license (Grade II or higher), boiler operator license, OSHA-10 / 30.
