Overview
Physician-based Oncology Senior Complex Coder role at Banner Health. This remote position supports busy hematology / oncology providers and requires extensive E / M coding experience in Surgical Hematology & Oncology and / or Radiology Oncology.
Responsibilities
- Perform full range of complex professional coding in support of specialty or multi-specialty physician practices by evaluating medical records and validating appropriate clinical diagnosis and procedure codes in accordance with national coding guidelines.
- Lead and participate in training and onboarding of new staff; conduct coding round table discussions.
- Code ICD-CM and CPT-4 for accurate APC assignment and address NCCI edits; reconcile charges as required.
- Abstract clinical information from medical records into electronic medical records; identify missing information and ensure complete records with appropriate signatures / authorizations.
- Provide quality assurance to ensure compliance with coding rules and regulations (CMS, OIG, HCFA, state Medicaid, and applicable standards).
- Compile daily and monthly reports; analyze data for research or performance improvement.
- Identify validation edits and revision issues to ensure compliant coding; mentor less experienced staff and assist in onboarding.
- Work independently with strong prioritization and accountability; interpret coding guidelines and LCDs for complex matters before escalation.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma / GED or equivalent training; Associate's degree in a related health care field or equivalent training. Must have :
At least one of the following certifications in active status : CPC, CCS, CCS-P, RHIA, or RHIT (AHIMA or AAPC). Certification may include a general area of specialty; this is a complex role beyond CPC-A.Five or more years of specialized, complex professional coding experience in clinical specialty areas.Knowledge of ICD and CPT coding principles per AHIMA coding competencies; ability to work autonomously with attention to detail.Ability to work remotely using common office programs, coding software, and abstracting systems.Preferred qualifications include Radiology Certified Coder (RCC) if in Imaging space and specialty coding certifications.
Work Environment and Additional Details
Fully remote position; work 8-hour shifts between 5am–7pm (Monday–Friday).
