Overview

The Vice President of Engineering is responsible for driving innovation and implementing best-in-class technical approaches to support our literacy products for students and educators, including development, user experience, DevOps, and cloud hosting operations. The ideal candidate fosters collaboration across disciplines to build scalable technology architectures, QA processes, and infrastructure, with a focus on driving portfolio growth and improving student performance and educator effectiveness. This role will have a highly visible presence among executives, stakeholders, and customers.

The Vice President will

  • Serve as a member of the Product Leadership team reporting directly to the SVP, Product
  • Apply Engineering & Infrastructure needs to the operating budget while upholding fiscal responsibility for cost centers
  • Utilize in-depth technical knowledge to scale development processes for a fast-evolving landscape
  • Deliver clear business communications to answer subject-matter questions
  • Work with Senior Leadership to ensure internal efficiency

Job Responsibilities

Technology & Engineering Leadership

  • Drive adoption of emerging technologies by evaluating and integrating leading solutions to enhance capabilities
  • Lead the organizational evolution to use AI / ML for insights and personalized learning
  • Implement development strategies aligned with long-term goals to deliver high-quality, scalable, and secure codebases
  • Guide best practices in agile development (SAFe) to improve collaboration across engineering, design, and infrastructure
  • Oversee end-to-end software development from architecture to deployment
  • Partner with leadership to align technology investments with business objectives
  • Identify opportunities to enhance core technology areas (3D animation, Speech Recognition, AI / ML)
  • Oversee DevOps and cloud hosting for high availability, security, and performance
  • Implement CI / CD pipelines for efficient deployment and iteration
  • Optimize cloud infrastructure (preferably AWS) for scalability and cost efficiency
  • Advocate infrastructure as code (IaC) and container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform)
  • Lead site reliability engineering (SRE) efforts to minimize downtime and improve resilience
  • Ensure security best practices and regulatory compliance
  • Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Build, mentor, and scale high-performing engineering, design, and DevOps teams
  • Foster a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and innovation
  • Collaborate with engineering, IT, and executive leadership to drive technology-forward strategies
  • Present infrastructure and design strategies to stakeholders and leadership
  • Performance & Optimization

  • Lead outsourcing of critical-path work to top-tier vendors to maximize internal resource capacity
  • Define and track key technology performance metrics (uptime, performance, security)
  • Use data-driven decision-making to improve efficiency, quality, deployment, and costs
  • Drive continuous improvement through testing, monitoring, and iterative enhancements
  • Job Requirements

  • 15+ years of experience in EdTech software development / DevOps, with at least 5+ years in a VP or equivalent executive leadership role
  • Excellence in communication and collaboration with business and technical teams
  • Strong administrative business acumen, including budget management, outsourcing, and scalable processes
  • Experience in K-12 industry preferred; SaaS experience beneficial
  • Background in cloud security, compliance, and disaster recovery planning
  • Knowledge of frontend and backend best practices; experience in Web and Native App development; SAFe certification preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership and team-building skills
  • Advanced degree in a related field is a plus
