Your Specific Responsibilities :

This position is assigned to the Area 2 Sexually Transmitted Disease Program housed within the Florida Department of Health in Leon County. The Area 2 program is a 14- county region and has the responsibility for the operation and / or surveillance of all activities involved in the control of Sexually Transmitted Diseases : especially Syphilis, linkage to care for people with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), and Chlamydia & Gonorrhea. The program’s main objective is to interrupt the transmission of STDs; thereby reducing their incidence and prevalence, as interrupt the spread of communicable infections. This position functions as a Disease Intervention Specialist (DIS) and must be able to work with minimal supervision in all aspects of the STD Program. Travel within the state of Florida is required.

This position provides confidential counseling, testing and referral for medical treatment for persons either diagnosed with or exposed to a STI. Clients who are diagnosed with a STIs are offered partner referral services that allow for the notification, screening and treatment referral for their sex or needle-sharing partners.

The incumbent for this position communicates with physicians, hospitals, clinics, and laboratory personnel, both public and private, to confirm treatment and diagnosis of all reportable STIs. The DIS will arrange for examination and treatment of the client as needed.

The incumbent must also conduct field investigations to locate clients in the home or community setting who test positive with a STD / HIV or have been named as an exposed contact. Provides counseling, education, testing and referral to treatment of all STIs.

Manages assigned cases of reportable STI conditions according to policy; prepares and submits all documents and reports associated with job assignment.

The DIS conducts interviews according to established guidelines and protocols.

Performs blood draws.

May be required to participate in outreach activities.

Compiles, organizes and analyzes data; plans, organizes and coordinates work activities; prepare records and reports maintains strict confidentiality; identifies community resources; prepares and conducts training programs; communicates effectively in day-to-day job activities which include written and oral skills; establishes and maintains effective working relationships with others. Computer skills and data entry skills required.

Take sexual risk history and identify symptoms of infection. Make appropriate treatment referrals.

Must document in the client records and on field records in a concise accurate manner. Enters STD results into the Surveillance Tools and Reporting System (STARS) system as assigned.

Accurately completes employee activity records in the Health Management System (HMS).

Develop and deliver education and prevention training, for diverse audiences, individuals, groups, and all clients, as assigned or as needed; on all STDs, which define ways to reduce the risk of transmitting the disease that they have or define techniques to risk reduction, so they will not become infected.

Licensure / registration / certification requirements(If applicable, list the appropriate Florida Statute or federal regulation cite) : Valid Driver’s License, Other job-related requirements for this position : This position may be required to work before, during and / or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of this position includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural. This position will have access to records containing social security numbers in the performance of job duties. May be required to use personal vehicle for work related duties.

Qualifications :

A Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field (public health or social / behavioral science), or a High School Diploma with 3-years of related work experience.

Preferred : Experience working in public health or have a medical / clinic environment. State Health Surveillance Systems (STARS, EHARS, MERLIN) Florida HIV 500 / 501 certification.
