Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. The position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

The Inspector - Permits performs inspections on construction projects taking place within the MCDOT right-of-way. Additionally, the Inspector - Permits protects the interests of the county and its taxpayers by ensuring a quality construction product, which will limit premature maintenance and future safety hazards. This position will interface with contractors, engineers, land developers, and property owners throughout the full development process.

We Require

Two years of experience as an inspector; Or

Two years of experience in an engineering or construction field, including surveying, drainage inspecting, hydrology, plan reviewing / examination and interpretation

High school diploma or GED

A combination of post-secondary education and / or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis

Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire

We Also Value

Associate's degree or higher in Engineering or a closely related field

Experience in utility construction, bridge construction, plan review, reading construction plans, and geotechnical work

National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) (Highway Construction Inspection or Materials Testing)

American Concrete Institute (ACI) Concrete Field Grade 1

American Public Works Association (APWA) Certified Public Infrastructure Inspector (CPII)

Arizona Technical Testing Institute Certifications (ATTI)

Job Contributions

Assure permitted projects are completed safely and per approved plans / specifications or approved revisions. Promote and enforce public safety

Coordinate all permit activity with contractors, subcontractors, utility companies, survey crews, soils lab, consultants, geotechnical firms, developers, and engineers as construction proceeds

Conduct pre-construction conferences, ongoing inspections, and final acceptance inspections of subdivisions

Review plans for accuracy and constructability

Review and approve traffic control plans for compliance with MCDOT and MUTCD standards, and inspect the job sites for the correct placement of the traffic control devices

Compile final test packets and as-builts for release of completed projects to be entered into the County maintenance system

Enforce penalties when specifications are not met

Issue cease work and encroachment notices for unauthorized, unsafe, or deficient construction. Investigate citizen complaints and mediate a satisfactory resolution.

Perform other duties as assigned or required

Working Conditions

Exerting 50 - 100 pounds occasionally, 10 - 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 - 20 pounds constantly

Incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperatures, wetness / humidity, respiratory hazards, and noise and vibration

Machines, tools, equipment, software, and hardware

Computer, smartphone, smart level, measuring tape, design specifications

Protective equipment required

Standard PPE (hard hats, safety vests, safety boots, safety glasses)
