Overview
The Senior Systems Engineer plays a critical role in supporting and modernizing client environments across servers, networks, and end-user systems. This position operates within a Managed Service Provider (MSP) model, providing hands-on technical leadership, troubleshooting expertise, and proactive solutions to a variety of small- and mid-sized business clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a technical lead for client infrastructure projects, upgrades, and deployments.
- Manage and maintain Windows and Linux servers, virtualization platforms (VMware, Hyper-V), and network devices.
- Administer email, collaboration, and productivity platforms such as Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace.
- Oversee user management, backups, patching, and endpoint protection across multiple client environments.
- Perform proactive system monitoring, performance tuning, and capacity planning.
- Respond to escalated support tickets and provide Tier 3 technical assistance to helpdesk teams.
- Collaborate directly with clients to plan infrastructure improvements, migrations, and security initiatives.
- Develop and maintain documentation, network diagrams, and standard operating procedures for client environments.
- Automate recurring administrative tasks using PowerShell or other scripting tools.
Required Skills and Experience
8+ years of experience in systems administration or IT infrastructure support, preferably within an MSP or consulting environment.Strong knowledge of Windows Server, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, and related core services.Experience with virtualization platforms (VMware ESXi or Microsoft Hyper-V).Proficiency in managing firewalls, VPNs, and network security appliances (e.g., WatchGuard, Fortinet, Barracuda).Familiarity with backup solutions, disaster recovery planning, and endpoint management tools (Intune, Datto RMM, or similar).Scripting experience (PowerShell, Bash, Python) for automation and troubleshooting.Associate degree in IT or equivalent professional experience.Preferred Qualifications
Hands-on experience with cloud or hybrid migrations (e.g., Microsoft 365, AWS, or GCP).Exposure to PSA and RMM tools (ConnectWise, Autotask, NinjaOne, Atera, etc.).Knowledge of cybersecurity principles, multi-factor authentication, and compliance frameworks.Relevant certifications such as CompTIA Network+ / Security+, Microsoft MCSA, or similar.Soft Skills
Excellent communication and documentation skills.Strong customer service orientation with a consultative mindset.Ability to manage multiple clients and priorities in a fast-paced MSP environment.Team-oriented but capable of working independently to resolve complex technical challenges.
