Overview of the Role

The Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences (EAPS) of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level or higher starting September 1, 2026, or a mutually agreed-upon date thereafter as described below.

We seek candidates who connect geophysics to other domains in the following broad areas : (i) cryosphere of Earth and / or other planetary bodies; (ii) geodynamics and planetary interiors; or (iii) fluid-rock interactions, including applications to petrology, Earth resources, carbon sequestration, and energy supply. We welcome candidates who use any approach or combination of approaches, including observation, theory, modeling, and experimentation. Exceptional candidates in other areas of geophysics or at higher ranks will be considered.

EAPS is an academic community of approximately 40 faculty, 100 research staff (including postdocs), and 180 students, who study integrated aspects of Earth and planetary sciences, including through partnership with the MIT-Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) Joint Program. EAPS is committed to academic excellence and to fostering an academically vibrant, equitable, and inclusive environment. Successful candidates are expected to have the potential for innovation and leadership in research and a commitment to teaching courses and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels in Earth and planetary sciences.

Responsibilities and Expectations

We request that applications and other materials, including (a) a curriculum vitae, (b) a research statement, (c) a teaching and mentoring statement, and (d) three letters of recommendation sent by the referees, be submitted online. The teaching and mentoring statement can also include topics such as service, outreach, or other means of supporting the educational environment. Employment is expected to begin on September 1, 2026, or a mutually agreed-upon date thereafter as described below. A Ph.D. in Earth Sciences or a closely related field is required by the start of employment.

Successful candidates are expected to contribute to teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels and to engage in research that advances Earth and planetary sciences.
