Job Description
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The Executive Director, Gift Planning will serve as a key member of the Hoag Hospital Foundation (HHF) team and lead the gift planning program in support of the Hoag Health System’s mission and impacts. The objective for the ED Gift Planning is to grow and diversify the pool of potential donors, ways that donors can support Hoag, and assets under management. Reporting to the SVP Strategic Philanthropy and in collaboration with HHF leadership, the ED will develop and execute strategies to engage donors to invest in Hoag through charitable gifts considered in the context of their overall financial and estate plans. In partnership with Development officers and the Prospect Management and Research (PMR) team, the ED will identify and capitalize on opportunities to integrate gift planning into donor conversations. The ED will exercise sound judgement and understanding of applicable tax laws to promote, and steward planned gifts, establishing trust with HHF colleagues, physician partners, donors, and donors’ families and advisors as appropriate.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a portfolio of donors with the goal of cultivating and soliciting outright gifts of assets, life income gifts, bequests, and other planned gift arrangements to support Hoag’s priorities.
- Collaborate with Development officers to identify opportunities to integrate planned gifts into donor cultivation and solicitation strategies, prioritizing blended gift proposals and joining in donor meetings when appropriate.
- Consult with the PMR team to identify the pool of potential gift planning donors, using data and business intelligence to create strategies for engagement.
- Grow the Hoag Heritage Society membership and gift planning assets under management.
- Manage the HHF Gift Planning Advisory Council, comprised of wealth advisors, estate planning attorneys, CPAs, realtors, and other affiliated professionals.
- Consult members of the Council on acceptance of complex gifts for donor engagement.
- Involve members of the Council and the HHF Board of Directors in donor conversations.
- Lead the strategy for HHF gift planning marketing, partnering with the Marketing team.
- Leverage opportunities in HHF and Hoag’s communications and events to promote legacy and planned gifts in appropriate, impactful ways.
- Educate constituents on the benefits of various planned gift vehicles and arrangements.
- Partner with the Donor Relations and Stewardship teams to report impacts to donors.
- Ensure that planned gift assets are managed appropriately by our corporate administrator and partner with the Finance team on applicable tax filings and reporting.
- Provide oversight on terminations of estates and trusts and claims on retirement accounts, life insurance policies, and other accounts for which Hoag is named the beneficiary.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degreeSeven years of progressively responsible experience in major / planned giving.A high degree of past success in a major gift or planned giving role including familiarity with trust, estate and tax laws.Proven experience promoting and accepting unique gift assets creatively and effectively.Thorough knowledge of gift vehicles, their legal and tax implications, IRS regulations and other technical aspects of deferred giving.Preferred
Designation as a Certified Specialist in Planned Giving (CSPG) or Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy (CAP).Seniority level : Executive
