Job Description

Summary / Objective

The Program Director is responsible for the overall coordination, implementation, and supervision of a specialized day program for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. This role ensures participants receive compassionate, person-centered care and that programming supports their cognitive, emotional, and physical well-being. The Program Director manages paid and volunteer staff, ensures regulatory compliance, and maintains a safe, engaging environment for participants. Additionally, this position works closely with the Executive Director to develop, evaluate, and improve programs in alignment with the mission and values of Today and Together.

  • Design and implement therapeutic, structured daily activities that are engaging and appropriate for individuals with memory impairment.
  • Ensure all programming aligns with best practices in dementia care and person-centered approaches.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness regularly and adjust as needed based on participant needs and feedback.
  • Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise participant aides, staff, and volunteers.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, support, and professional development opportunities.
  • Ensure staff understand and follow care protocols, safety guidelines, and communication standards.
  • Along with the Executive Director, conduct assessments and intakes for new participants.
  • Maintain regular communication with participants' families and caregivers.
  • Act as a resource and advocate for families, offering support and education as needed.
  • Provide direct participant care and supervision as needed.
  • Ensure proper staffing levels and coverage.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including documentation and reporting.
  • Maintain accurate records, including attendance, incident reports, care plans, and evaluations.
  • Maintain a best-in-class training program for staff and volunteers.
  • Oversee safety protocols, including emergency preparedness and medication supervision.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and memory care experts to ensure staff are trained in dementia care, first aid, and de-escalation techniques.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Provide direct supervision to program staff and volunteers.
  • Foster a culture of respect, safety, and professional growth.
  • Ensure adherence to all safety standards and regulatory care practices.
  • Work Environment

  • This position involves working in a dynamic and emotionally sensitive environment.
  • Physical Demands

  • Sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, and reach.
  • Safely lift up to 50 pounds and carry up to 20 pounds.
  • Operate standard office equipment, including computer, printer, and telephone.
  • Physical requirements include assisting with participants’ mobility as needed, and remaining on feet for extended periods during activities.
  • Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Experience in a supervisory role within a dementia care, adult day program, or assisted living community.
  • Deep understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
  • Familiarity with California Department of Social Services Title 22.
  • Skills and Abilities

  • Strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with activity programming and therapeutic recreation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Certifications (Preferred but not Required)

  • CPR and First Aid.
  • Additional Requirements

  • Must pass a background check in accordance with California Department of Social Services.
  • Valid California Driver’s License and insurability per company policy.
  • Flexibility in schedule, including occasional evenings or weekends for outreach or events.
