Abilene Police Officer Training
Under general supervision, the role involves training at the Abilene Police Academy to learn the fundamentals of law enforcement and crime prevention work. Training may include physical fitness training, self-defense, assisting with traffic control, and investigative work. The academy start date will be determined later. Applicants will complete the Personal History Statement but do not submit it with the application. They will be advised when to provide it.
This position exercises no supervision.
Important and essential duties include participating in rigorous physical conditioning, effective arrest techniques, preparing investigative reports, studying federal, state, and case law, and learning proper maintenance and use of firearms. Officers will train to exercise independent judgment in detaining, searching, arresting, and using force. They will practice effective communication over law enforcement radio channels, carry and transport weapons and equipment, pursue fleeing suspects, perform rescue operations, load and fire firearms, identify and describe people and objects, conduct searches, and develop relationships with the public.
