Job description

Manager, Engineering - PX / RCM

Octave is a modern behavioral health practice creating a new standard for care delivery that's both high-quality and accessible. With in-person and virtual clinics in multiple states, the company offers evidence-based individual, couples, and family therapy, while pioneering relationships with payers to make care more affordable through insurance. By raising the bar on how care is delivered and how providers are supported, we are building a sustainable system that values equity, affordability, and effectiveness.

About the Role :

Octave is looking for an Engineering Manager with demonstrated success leading a team of engineers at a startup. You will lead our Revenue Cycle Management and Provider Experience teams. These teams support the tools and systems used by providers, as well as the automation of client billing, insurance claim, and provider payment processing. The ideal candidate for this role is a proactive, growth-minded, and people-focused leader.

As a leader, you're eager to support the team in building iterative projects that help tangibly move the needle for our users and are comfortable rolling up your sleeves and helping wherever you're needed. You thrive by helping your team thrive. Technically, you're a proficient engineer with experience working with APIs and third party integrations, and have an affinity for leading and participating in architecture and systems design discussions. We are a small but growing team who work remotely, using Python, PostgreSQL, gRPC, React, TypeScript, and GraphQL.

Management Responsibilities :

  • Ensures a safe, secure, and compliant work environment.
  • Accomplishes staff results by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.

  • Provide leadership to the team, including setting goals, providing guidance, and ensuring the team's overall success.
  • Set performance expectations and goals for team members. Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide feedback, and address performance issues.
  • Identify skill gaps within the team and develop strategies for filling those gaps. Support employee development through training, mentoring, and coaching. Identify high-potential employees and create succession plans.

Responsibilities Include :

  • Help set your team up to thrive at Octave. Regularly meet with your team via one-on-ones. Understand what is / isn't working and help them problem solve therein. Support areas of growth and career development.
  • Collaborate with product, design, technical leadership, and other cross-functional stakeholders to define our product strategy and architectural vision.
  • Help ensure smooth and incremental delivery of high-quality user experiences, and operational automation in a predictable manner.
  • Make informed decisions based on data. We like to operate scientifically, make hypotheses and measure the results.
  • Help refine and drive our hiring efforts.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • 1+ years of experience managing a team (or teams) of software engineers at a startup. This includes helping with career development, decision making and leadership.
  • 5+ years of experience as a software engineer working on web-based technologies. Preferably in one or more of our technologies (Python, Django, TypeScript, React).
  • Nice to have (truly) : growth experience, experience in healthcare, experience working in other regulated fields (education, security)
  • Experience building products from the ground up as well as improving existing products; willingness to roll up your sleeves to achieve outcomes.
  • Empathy & perspective for end-users and stakeholders with strong verbal and written communication, especially when engaging with non-technical stakeholders (e.g., operations, finance).
  • Curious and teachable; a growth mindset towards building new skills and taking on new responsibilities as our business needs mature and change.
  • Willingness to be a servant leader.
  • Octave's Company Values :

The below values drive our day-to-day operations.

  • We're human beings first. We operate with empathy and kindness with our clients, with our collaborators, and with ourselves.
  • People deserve better than status quo. We're willing to tackle the intractable problems, no matter how big, because someone should. We ask big questions, we craft big solutions, and we challenge ourselves and others to make it happen.
  • No bystanders. No stars. No tourists. Each person has been selected to be here, and with that comes a responsibility to bring your expertise, share your ideas, and help make this company better.
  • Partnership paves the path ahead. We don't operate in a silo, internally or externally. To transform the system, we believe in working with others to create something bigger, better, and stronger.
  • Quality is crucial at scale. Quality is core to our business, and we refuse to sacrifice it as we grow.
  • Progress is a process. In the pursuit of progress, we iterate, reflect, learn, adjust and always leave things better than we found them.
  • There are people behind every data point. We recognize that numbers tell only one part of the story, and we also do the work to understand impacts at the individual level.
  • Physical Requirements :

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to frequently communicate with others through virtual meeting applications such as Zoom and Google Meet.
