Nature & Purpose of Position / Usual Duties :
The Department of Mass Communication at Sam Houston State University invites applications for the prestigious Phillip G. Warner Endowed Visiting Assistant Professor in Journalism position. We seek a highly motivated individual capable of inspiring and mentoring future media professionals. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in journalism and / or public relations, with teaching and service experience in media relations, strategic communications, and journalism. The candidate should also be interested in contributing to the development of the department's new major and minor programs. The position begins Fall 2026.
Key responsibilities include :
Teaching a 3 / 3 course load, including the media practicum, such as Priority One, the department's on-campus student PR agency. Teaching two or more courses, such as mass media writing, social media, PR campaigns, sports communication, sports PR, or related fields in PR and / or journalism. Developing and implementing new courses to prepare students with essential workforce skills aligned with current media trends. Organizing guest speakers, workshops, and events supporting the department's mission. Participating in departmental, college, and university service while maintaining active engagement in the field.

About the Mass Communication Department :
The department serves over 500 students studying journalism, broadcast production, public relations, advertising, and film. Located in the Dan Rather Communications Building, it hosts 90.5 The Kat, Channel 7, Bearkat Student Media, The Houstonian, and the Heatwave Media and Film Festival. The faculty combines research and practice-oriented backgrounds, offering diverse perspectives.
