Behavior Intervention Specialist
Under the general supervision, collaborates with special education administrators, classroom teachers and other special youth services personnel to develop and implement Behavior Intervention Plans and provide one-on-one and / or group Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to designated students; and perform related duties as required.
The Behavior Intervention Specialist classification is distinguished by the advanced knowledge of Applied Behavior Analysis, and provides training and support to instructional assistants and school site personnel; one-on-one and / or group intensive behavioral intervention services.
The minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in applied behavior analysis, psychology, special education, child development, or a related field. Minimum of two years of experience providing direct services to students with various developmental disabilities, mental health diagnoses and / or severe behavior problems in a home-based, center-based, and / or educational / social services setting. Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification preferred; possession of a valid CPR / First Aid certificate and any other certifications pertaining to this position at time of application and throughout employment. Pass a required pre-employment physical examination. Access to reliable transportation for job-related travel.
The incumbents in this class must be able to see to read small print; speak clearly and hear normal voice conversation; sit, stoop, carry, kneel, and bend; reach over head, and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects; use fingers repetitively; stand for long periods; walk long distances, walk quickly for short distances, and keep pace with students; maintain balance; perform lifting, pushing and / or pulling over 50 pounds with assistance; ability to apply appropriate techniques to mitigate the threat of harming self or others which could involved evading, blocking, and restraining; operate office machines and equipment; operate a motor vehicle in a safe and effective manner.
The work environment includes exposure to minor contagious illnesses (colds, flu, etc.); direct contact with students, staff, and public; work around foul odors; work around loud noise; work with exposure to bodily fluids; may be subject to physical and emotional outbursts by students including such behaviors as kicking, spitting, scratching, hitting, biting, or self-injurious behavior.
