Title of Position : Transit Collision and Service Technician I

Position Type : Full-Time, Non-Exempt

Location : Onsite in Aspen, Colorado (or as directed by manager).

Pay Range : $26.84 - $32.21 per hour, based on experience.

Position Purpose

Performs routine and minor repairs and preventative maintenance on RFTA buses and automotive equipment, including conventional fuels and specialized alternative fuels (Biofuels, CNG, Battery Electric). This includes removing, repairing, and replacing parts, using tools safely and professionally, and providing varied support to the Operations Department.

Performs routine and minor collision repairs and accident damage on buses and equipment. Prepares and paints vehicle parts and equipment; applies decals, graphics and signage for exterior and interior vehicle use.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities

  • Operate vehicles in strict compliance with RFTA policies, procedures, and all applicable traffic laws.
  • Perform routine maintenance and general repairs on transit equipment and support vehicles, including tire replacement, brakes, minor repairs, body panels, and seasonal equipment switchover.
  • Inspect vehicles per schedule (State of good repair, Safety and DOT inspections); identify defects and perform repairs; conduct preventative maintenance on BEB and Hybrid vehicles.
  • Troubleshoot vehicle systems on a limited basis; identify causes and perform repairs.
  • Assist in maintenance of vehicles using alternative propulsion technologies (BEB, CNG, Hybrid, Biodiesel).
  • Ensure proper vehicle assignments and meet vehicle needs.
  • Respond to road calls and service calls; support Operations with vehicle exchanges, repairs, or recovery as needed.
  • Document actions in written / electronic format; complete repair orders, logs, warranty information, etc.
  • Seasonally inspect vehicles and perform necessary repairs.
  • Assist in providing limited training and direction to other mechanics.
  • Continuously improve professional knowledge through routine training and seminars; meet safety meeting and training attendance standards.
  • Complete required safety and compliance training in Travitor; inability to complete required training may affect performance reviews.
  • Maintain a neat and orderly work area.
  • Provide Operations Department support (bus pullout, exchanges, recovery, snow plowing, sanding) and perform related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot and repair alternative-fueled vehicles (biofuels, BEV, CNG, Hybrid).
  • May serve as a fill-in Service Worker when needed.
  • Assist Risk Management with damage estimates for vehicles involved in accidents; coordinate with outside claim adjusters as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Advanced computer skills and data entry ability.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with others and adhere to department code of conduct.
  • Solid knowledge of operating theory, failure diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance for buses and heavy vehicles.
  • Proficiency with common mechanic hand tools, pneumatic tools, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 70E Electrical Safety, OSHA and safe working practices.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to read and use maintenance, repair, parts, schematics, and ladder logic manuals; experience with computer-based maintenance information systems, FMCSR, service updates, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Strong communication with employees, the public, emergency responders, law enforcement, and regulatory personnel.
  • Ability to identify differences in high voltage and low voltage systems on BEB and Hybrid vehicles.
  • Willingness to learn and develop skills for BEV, CNG, Hybrid, and Biodiesel technologies.
  • Decision-making skills in troubleshooting and vehicle recovery scenarios.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical, air, chassis / suspension, HVAC, diesel engines and transmissions; basic welding knowledge.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English; valid Colorado Driver's License required.
  • Qualifications

    Education

  • High school education or equivalent; training and certifications required to perform role. Vocational / Technical degree (diesel, automotive, collision refinishing, etc.) preferred.
  • License & Certification Requirements

  • Valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License; ability to obtain Colorado CDL with a B-P2 rating within two weeks of starting employment. Out-of-state license holders must obtain Colorado license within 90 days of hire.
  • DOT Physical Exam Certificate (current).
  • Air Conditioning Section 609 Refrigerant Certification.
  • UST Certification (Class C).
  • RFTA Forklift Certification.
  • CDOT Annual Inspections Certification (within 2 years of employment).
  • CDOT Brake Inspector Certification (within 2 years).
  • CNG Fuel Certification.
  • Experience

  • Two (2) years of actual experience or a combination of formal training and experience required.
  • Working Conditions

    Position involves strenuous physical work; exposure to high voltage systems and hazardous materials; automotive / industrial environment; varying weather; potential for road emergencies; exposure to bodily fluids; PPE provided. Operations run 24 / 7 at two locations; weekend and holiday work may be required. Shifts are typically 10.5 hours with non-traditional start times.
