The Computing Research Association (CRA) , founded in 1972, is a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. Our mission is to catalyze computing research by engaging industry, government, and academia by leading the computing research community, informing policymakers and the public, and promoting the development of an innovative and responsible computing research workforce.

CRA is seeking a full-time Communications Assistant or Associate to primarily support the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) , a programmatic committee of CRA supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The CCC's mission is to enable the pursuit of innovative, high-impact computing research that aligns with pressing national and global challenges. CCC is a respected and visionary organization that convenes thought leaders from academia, industry, and government to articulate compelling research visions and communicate them effectively to stakeholders, policymakers, the public, and the broad computing research community.

The title and level of the selected candidate (Assistant or Associate) will depend on experience and qualifications.

  • Assistant level : Ideal for recent graduates or those with limited professional experience (typically 0-2 years).
  • Associate level : Ideal for candidates with more established experience in communications or related fields (typically 2-5 years).

The Communications Assistant or Associate will report to CRA's Director of Communications and Member Engagement and will work closely with the Director of Research Community Initiatives, other CCC and CRA staff, and CCC Council members to support CCC communications and activities. This role is ideal for an early or mid-career communications professional who thrives in a collaborative environment, is detail-oriented, and is eager to learn about the computing research ecosystem. The successful candidate will contribute to meaningful projects, develop a wide range of communications skills, and gain experience working at the intersection of academia, policy, and research leadership.

Key Responsibilities

CCC Communications and Engagement

  • Contribute to the execution of CCC's communications strategy across digital platforms.
  • Draft and publish content for the CCC website, newsletters, reports, and media platforms.
  • Manage CCC's website and social media channels, ensuring timely and engaging updates.
  • Translate long-form reports, white papers, and workshop outputs into compelling storytelling pieces that educate, engage, and inspire audiences.
  • Manage CCC's email outreach strategy, including contact management, segmentation, and analytics.
  • Support CRA's broader website redevelopment project by coordinating CCC-related content updates.
  • Collaborate with CRA communications staff to align CCC messaging with CRA's broader strategy and organizational voice.
  • Content Development and Editing

  • Gather, coordinate, and prepare content from CCC Council members and other contributors, including conducting interviews to support articles and other communications materials.
  • Write and edit materials for clarity, accuracy, and impact across multiple platforms.
  • Ensure consistency with CRA's style and branding guidelines across all CCC communications.
  • Program and Event Support

  • Attend and support CCC events to generate content, including capturing photos, audio, and video for use across CCC's communications channels.
  • Assist with planning and logistics for CCC meetings, workshops, and webinars.
  • Organizational Support

  • Maintain communications calendars, files, and databases.
  • Track deadlines, progress, and deliverables for CCC projects.
  • Provide additional support for CCC and CRA operations as assigned.
  • Qualifications

    Required

  • Bachelor's degree or higher.
  • Relevant communications experience : Assistant level (0-2 years of experience) or Associate level (2-5 years of experience).
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with staff, Council members, and external partners.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving capabilities.
  • Knowledge of major social media platforms and experience developing and managing content across them, with an emphasis on LinkedIn.
  • Familiarity with website editing, email marketing, and contact / database management.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Eligible to work in the United States.
  • Ability to be at CRA headquarters in Washington, D.C., at least three consecutive days / month for organizational core weeks.
  • Preferred

  • Experience with multimedia content creation (e.g., photography, video, and audio).
  • Demonstrated interest in or experience with computing research, science communications, or technical subject matter.
  • Interest in government affairs and public policy as they relate to computing research.
  • Familiarity with report and white paper development, and the ability to translate technical content into compelling storytelling for broad audiences.
  • Experience with email marketing strategy, including list segmentation, analytics, and campaign management.
  • Experience with media engagement, including drafting press releases, pitching stories, or working with journalists to share research or organizational news.
  • Familiarity with digital publishing platforms (e.g., Substack, Medium) and how to use them strategically to reach and engage new audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with senior academics, policymakers, and other stakeholders.
  • Creativity, curiosity, and initiative in developing new approaches to content and engagement.
  • Compensation and Benefits

    CRA offers a competitive salary in the range of $55,000-$99,000 , commensurate with experience and level, along with an excellent benefits package, including health insurance, retirement contributions, and generous vacation and holiday policies.
