Overview

Join Canonical as an Ubuntu Engineering Lead. Canonical is a leading provider of open source software, operating systems, and global enterprise solutions. Your role will involve leading engineering teams across the Ubuntu Ecosystem, ensuring quality, performance, and resilience of the operating system.

Responsibilities

  • Own the technical roadmap and deliver high‑quality, performant software in Rust, Go, Python, Flutter, or C / C++.
  • Lead, coach and develop a high‑performing engineering team, fostering growth and a positive culture.
  • Set expectations and collaborate with senior management, product management and external stakeholders.
  • Champion upstream contributions and community engagement; author and improve technical documentation.
  • Optimize Ubuntu for performance, reliability, and security; debug complex system‑level issues.
  • Participate in planning, estimation and execution of engineering initiatives.
  • Identify and ship new features that elevate the Linux developer and user experience.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or an equivalent alternative path.
  • Strong track record as a technical leader, building and nurturing engineering teams.
  • Demonstrated passion for open source; significant experience with Rust, Go, Python, Flutter or C / C++.
  • Excellent written and spoken English; strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Result‑oriented with a personal drive to meet commitments.
  • Ability to travel twice a year for company events (up to two weeks each).

    • Nice‑to‑have

  • Experience contributing to or leading open‑source projects.
  • Experience with Linux distributions / distribution engineering.
  • Knowledge of software packaging and distribution mechanisms.
  • Performance or security engineering experience.
