Assistant Professor Faculty Positions in Physical Oceanography and Marine Geology

The Department of Marine Science at The University of Texas at Austin seeks to fill two tenure-track assistant professor positions in the fields of :

1) Physical oceanography : we seek Interdisciplinary researchers who couple physical oceanography with biogeochemistry and / or biotic processes in estuarine, coastal, and shelf environments. Areas of research interest include, but are not limited to : circulation and connectivity between watersheds, estuaries, shelves, and the open ocean, ocean-atmosphere interactions, estuarine-shelf exchange processes, mixing, sediment transport, mesoscale / sub-mesoscale variability, and climate ocean dynamics.

2) Marine geology : we seek interdisciplinary researchers who explore questions related to coastal geomorphology, including but not limited to : sedimentary processes, shoreline change and sea-level rise, barrier-island and estuarine-shelf dynamics, and coastal hazard mitigation.

In both cases, research using field observations, remote sensing and / or computational approaches is appropriate. Further, research that applies to the Texas coast is of particular interest, and experience in interdisciplinary collaboration is desired. The Department is housed in the College of Natural Sciences and is currently built around strengths in ecology, biogeochemistry, and organismal biology, and thus, a demonstrated ability to succeed in such a setting will be an asset. Successful applicants for these positions will be expected to establish an internationally recognized, extramurally funded research program and mentor research personnel, teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and contribute to departmental service.

The positions are located at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas, Texas, which holds strong collaborative ties to the research community on the university's Austin campus, including the Jackson School of Geosciences , the UT Applied Research Laboratories and Cockrell School of Engineering . The Institute is home to the Department's graduate degree program and has state-of-the-art laboratories and seawater-supplied facilities for experimental research. The Institute is also in close proximity to a variety of marine habitats that include near-pristine to anthropogenically altered estuarine ecosystems (open water, seagrasses, mangroves, saltmarshes, microbial mats, oyster reefs), with salinities ranging from oligohaline to hypersaline, as well as near- and offshore habitats of the Gulf of Mexico. The Institute hosts the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve , Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystems Long Term Ecological Research program , Fisheries and Mariculture Laboratory complex , and the Center for Coastal Ocean Science . The Institute also houses full-service core analytical facilities , a fleet of research vessels and will take ownership of a new 78-ft Technikraft catamaran research vessel in spring 2027. This vessel will be fully equipped and specifically designed to support diverse research activities, including biological, geological, biogeochemical and physical oceanography.

Qualifications

A PhD or equivalent is required, and postdoctoral research experience is strongly recommended.
