Summary :
The Animal Recovery Center (ARC) and Canine Annex for Recovery and Enrichment (CARE) are committed facilities focused on the recovery and rehabilitation of animals rescued from cruelty and neglect. Our dedicated team collaborates closely with ASPCA divisions to provide high-quality, holistic care.
The Director of Veterinary Services for ARC is responsible for delivering compassionate veterinary care to at-risk animals while supervising daily operations to streamline animal flow. This leadership role requires accountability, urgent action in providing care, and alignment with Fear Free practices.
This role manages 1-2 Licensed Veterinary Technicians and operates on a schedule of Sunday-Wednesday, 9am-7pm (flexibility on Sundays is possible).
Responsibilities :
- Medical Case Management (60%) :
Provide individualized medical care for a diverse range of animals ensuring their overall health and psychological well-being.
Participate in interdisciplinary case reviews, including euthanasia discussions, guided by quality of life assessments.Conduct medical intakes and exams for new cases, collaborating with partner departments when necessary.Support large-scale rescue efforts in alignment with ARC’s medical protocols.Implement Fear Free handling in all medical procedures.Maintain thorough and accurate medical records for all patients.Respond to after-hours medical emergencies as needed.Oversee the ARC animal census and ensure proper animal flow within the facility.People Management (20%) :Supervise daily care and medical case flow for all animals at ARC.
Conduct daily rounds and team meetings to ensure comprehensive care and collaboration.Develop and refine SOPs, ensuring integration with programming across departments.Provide mentorship and constructive feedback to direct reports, fostering professional development.Address staff concerns confidentially, cultivating a supportive work environment.Ensure high standards of animal care and staff engagement in the organization’s values.Interdepartmental Communication & Administration (20%) :Support collaboration with departments such as Humane Law Enforcement and the Adoption Center.
Maintain confidentiality with sensitive case information.Attend and contribute to various meetings for continuous improvement of clinic operations.Provide accurate and timely medical information to stakeholders, including the public.Assist in special projects, and manage data collection as necessary.Qualifications :
Strong ability to excel in fast-paced environments and to prioritize tasks with precision.Effective communicator and team player, able to inspire and guide staff members.Willingness to adapt to new protocols and share knowledge with others.Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds; stamina for hands-on animal care tasks.Comfortable working in physically demanding situations, including exposure to biological hazards.Available for additional hours, including weekends and emergency situations as needed.Exemplifies the ASPCA's Core Values, including commitment to animal welfare, ownership of work outcomes, teamwork, uplifting others, and focusing on impactful change.
Additional Information :
This full-time, exempt position is based in our 92nd Street office with some required flexibility for hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
