Emulsion / Mix Plant Manager

The Emulsion / Mix Plant Manager is responsible for overseeing operations within the Red Diamond Emulsion and Mix Plant, with a focus on the safe, compliant, and efficient production of emulsion and mixed blasting products used in industrial blasting operations for construction, mining, and quarrying. This role supports production, packaging, utilities, and personnel management while ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, and operational standards. This position reports to the Red Diamond Operations Manager and will have approximately 5 direct reports. The manager will be expected to learn the technology, equipment, and procedures, participate in training the team, and play a key role in commissioning and optimizing the facility.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Oversee and direct Emulsion / Mix Plant Supervisor.
  • Conduct performance management and regular one-on-one check-ins with direct reports.
  • Conduct daily safety and communication meetings with the team.
  • Complete Management of Change (MOC) for the area.
  • Review costs vs. budget and propose annual budget.
  • Update procedures for the area as necessary.
  • Participate in process hazard analyses for the area.
  • Oversee training of all direct reporting personnel.
  • Report on monthly production vs. plan to operations manager.
  • Coordinate time-off requests among the team to ensure safety and adequate coverage.
  • Collaborate with internal and external resources to apply best practices.
  • Support Process Safety Management (PSM) activities including Management of Change (MOC) and operating procedures maintenance.
  • Coordinate planned maintenance schedules with maintenance and engineering functions.
  • Monitor and report on area cost center monthly.
  • Maintain bill of materials accurately for produced products.
  • Develop weekly and monthly schedules for production of products.
  • Ensure explosives basis of safety principles are always followed.
  • Maintain excellent housekeeping throughout the production area.
  • Own and keep current operating procedures and training programs.
  • Drive long-term improvements in safety, efficiency, and operability.
  • Champion Pre-Startup Safety Reviews and validation process changes.
  • Maintain process safety documentation (e.g., P&IDs, flow diagrams, mass balances).
  • Analyze production data and develop new methods for data collection and management.
  • Collaborate with the quality department on lab and product quality needs.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or vocational training preferred.
  • 2–5 years of progressive leadership roles in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in a chemical or explosives manufacturing setting preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint) and basic analytical tools.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to provide constructive feedback.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing setting, including climbing stairs and ladders outdoors and indoors.
  • Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Safety & Compliance : Strong understanding of OSHA, EPA, and Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements.
  • Explosives Manufacturing : Knowledge of emulsion and mix plant processes, including basis of safety principles for energetic materials.
  • Leadership & Team Development : Ability to coach, mentor, and develop a team while fostering a culture of safety and accountability.
  • Problem-Solving : Skilled in troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and process issues in a production environment.
  • Continuous Improvement : Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing principles and root cause analysis for operational efficiency.
  • Technical Aptitude : Ability to interpret P&IDs, flow diagrams, and process documentation.
  • Data Analysis : Competence in analyzing production data and identifying trends for optimization.
  • Communication : Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills for reporting and team coordination.
  • Planning & Scheduling : Strong organizational skills for managing production schedules and maintenance planning.
  • Work Environment

  • This role is based in a manufacturing plant environment with exposure to outdoor and indoor conditions.
  • Work may involve proximity to energetic materials and chemicals, requiring strict adherence to safety protocols.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection will be required.
  • Noise levels may be moderate to high in certain areas of the plant.
  • Occasional travel to other company sites or vendor locations may be necessary.
