Job Description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Dentistry invites applications for Chair of the Department of Periodontology. This full-time position is at the Associate or Full Professor level, tenured or tenure-earning. The UAB School of Dentistry seeks applicants with a demonstrated record of teaching, scholarly activity, academic leadership, and successful research to contribute to our commitment of being a leader in oral healthcare.

The Chair will provide vision, focus, and mentorship to further develop a dynamic and growing department. The Chair will identify, cultivate, and pursue internal and external partnerships that lead to collaborative opportunities compatible with the school and university strategic vision, mission, values, and goals. The Chair will provide departmental representation on school and university committees.

The Chair reports directly to the Dean and is an integral part of the UAB School of Dentistry leadership team. The Chair will lead the development and implementation of a strategic plan that defines a clear sense of direction for the team. The Chair will also lead by demonstrating and encouraging engagement with key constituencies. The Chair will foster a culture of philanthropy through strategies that support department and school initiatives.

The Chair's administrative duties include financial stewardship and personnel management. The Chair will help plan, implement, and responsibly manage fiscal operations. The Chair will recruit and mentor faculty, staff, and students to encourage success while evaluating and recognizing professional contributions by faculty and staff.

In addition, the Chair will provide innovative leadership and advocacy in four critical areas : predoctoral education, advanced education program in Periodontology, patient care, and research. Educational responsibilities of the Chair include facilitation of the ongoing development, implementation, and improvement of strong pre- and post-doctoral educational programs that advance changes in the discipline and foster interdisciplinary integration in the curriculum. As an educational leader, the Chair will develop programs to involve dental students and residents in research activities and work with faculty to develop and deliver continuing education programs locally, nationally, and internationally. When appropriate, the Chair will coordinate recruitment of students / residents and provide letters of support for students on request.

Patient care responsibilities include investigation of new and emerging patient care treatments and developments in dental practice equipment and techniques. The Chair will identify and implement policies, procedures, and processes to increase clinic revenues and demonstrate an entrepreneurial mindset exemplified by creating ideas for improving clinical operational efficiencies while balancing the academic nature of the curriculum and the business needs of the clinical enterprise. The Chair will develop and implement systems / processes where clinical outcomes are defined, measured, evaluated, evidence based, and continuously improved.

The Chair will lead in the development of a strong research program by practicing, advocating, and promoting high standards of scholarship and sustaining a personally funded extramural research program. The Chair will maintain fiscal integrity and regulatory compliance relating to the department research enterprise.

Academic rank, salary, and tenure status will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications

Qualified applicants must have a DDS / DMD or equivalent degree and must have completed a CODA accredited Advanced Education Program in Periodontology with experience in the field. Qualified applicants must be board eligible or board certified in Periodontology. The applicants must be eligible for licensure and / or a special teaching permit in Alabama.
